So many good ones already listed, I'd maybe throw Sklar in the mix on resume.

I think a very smooth rock player was Ronnie Lane.

Those are on the top of my list. I'd add Chris Squire, John Myung, and Jeff Berlin (jazz).

May not be the best, but Justin Chancellor is very underrated

Since this is a favorite list not necessarily who I think is the best:
George Porter, JR
Mike Watt
Bootsy Collins
Flea
John Taylor
Peter Hook
Eric avery
Marty Noble
Duff
John Stirratt
that's just off the top of my head. Hmmmmmm...

Adding Tal Wilkenfield to the discussion as hands down my favorite bass player that I'd wanna do unspeakable stuff with. And she's also really, really good.

I'll go with Entwistle. Lately I've been playing the remastered version of Quadrophenia a LOT just to focus on the bass which is tremendous.

Most have been mentioned, however, Trevor Bolder was a beast.

I'm choosing Kathy Valentine. Along with Gina Schock, she was part of one of the best rhythm sections of all time. She and Schock were like a drum/bass machine.
