Well that’s dumb because he didn’t do country music.
Waylon Jennings?
Merle Haggard?

He did not become the Brown Dirt Cowboy until 1975.

FIFY
But Tumbleweed connection is a top five album for me. My Fathers Gun, Amoreena, and Burn Down the Mission are all favorites of mine.

In 1975, Elton became Captain Fantastic.
His lyricist, Bernie Taupin, was the Brown Dirt Cowboy.

And you probably rode with both of them on Brokeback Mountain

False. He wanted out.
When I look back, boy, I must have been green
Bopping in the country, fishing in a stream
Looking for an answer, trying to find a sign
Until I saw your city lights, honey, I was blind
They said, get back, honky cat
Better get back to the woods
Well, I quit those days and my redneck ways
And, oh, the change is gonna do me good

It was a very good album, different than most of what I listened to at the time. But this thread is just strange talking abut Elton being a 'country' artist. Just because a musician makes one or two songs in a country vein, does not make them country. Hell, even the Stones & Beatles did a country tune...

I never understood how Charlie Rich thought he was more country than John Denver

It was and still is hard to classify what Charlie Rich did. He did country, countrypolitan, jazz, R&B, blues, gospel, blue-eyed soul and rockabilly.
He is too diverse to be considered a country artist.
