If you ever in a depressed mood, he will surely make it worse. There is no artist who I go to more when I'm feeling blue. I mean that in a good way.

All due respect to Elliot Smith, but was anyone really surprised when he killed himself? I'm not sure how much of his personal life (namely drug and alcohol abuse) were known to his fans but obviously his lyrics and overall style of music were depressing to say the least.

I think people were surprised, yes... that said, in retrospect, everyone can see the things he was dealing with that made it very understandable/believable...
Now, there are some people that don't believe it was a suicide at all...

I just got their last album recently. There are two absolutely killer Smith songs on that record.

there seems to be a good argument... besides all the other stuff I find it hard to believe anyone would choose to stab themselves in the chest to off themselves...

The situation surrounding Elliott's death is definitely a strange one. The argument with his girlfriend for starters. He also owed a ton of money to drug dealers supposedly.
But, as hard as it is to imagine someone stabbing themselves in the chest (he actually did it twice), it happens fairly frequently. A good friend of mines dad killed himself by stabbing himself in the kitchen several time in front of his wife. It happens
No doubt Elliott's situation was weird, but his girlfriend is still close with Elliott's parents. I think she honestly cared about him. I'm sure he wasn't easy to live with at times
