Anyone in here have any tips on how to listen to downloaded FLAC files in my car? I know that my car can't read FLAC files so i need to convert them to an iPod readable file.

Anyone a pro at doing this and have a software recommendation?

While I wait to get one of these, are there other options?

Downloaded and tried to use it. Everytime it encodes a file the length is 0:00. Can't figure out why.

Don't know what to tell you about that. I don't have it here at work but I can try it for you tonight. In the meantime there are other tools out there that do the same thing. You might try one of them.

Neil Young sells a thing called Pono but its more expensive and gets worse reviews than the Sony. I have a Sony mp3 Walkman that I use all the time, but not that one. Mine's smaller. Converting to mp3 seems to defeat the purpose of using FLAC. I don't know of any way to play FLAC files other than a player specifically made for that.

Can your iPod play Apple lossless (.m4a)?

Because there is the option to make that conversion, which would be better, IMHO (although not as compact as .mp3 files).

It's not so much that you're using FLAC but maybe you've downloaded some music from archive.org or somewhere in FLAC format and now you want to play them in your car. You'll probably need to convert them to some other format to do that.

100% correct. Downloaded from bt.etree.org. Want to put on my ipod to listen in car. iPod doesn't read FLAC.

Can you tell me how you tried to encode it? I just dl'd lame and encoded a FLAC file and it worked just fine for me. Here were the steps I used:
1. Select file to encode -> Next
2. Output module: LAME mp3 encoder, output location: /Users/me/Documents. -> Next
3. Quality: Archiving best quality (320 kbps) -> Next
4. Click play button...stuff happens...file appears in documents directory.
5. Play mp3 file & it sounds fine. -> Profit!

ETA: if you can give me a link to a file you're trying to encode, I'll download it and see if I can get it to work. There might be something wrong with the file itself.

Either convert the FLAC to ALAC so it can be played on the Apple device, or buy a player that plays FLAC and doesn't require you to use proprietary file formats.

I use Bigasoft Audio Converter, very simple drag and drop files/folders, choose destination, choose ALAC (Apple Lossless Audio Codec) and that's it. Converts them all to ALAC and will play the lossless audio on your Apple device.

After downloading tons of software and nothing working, i finally figured out that THIS was the problem. I deleted the file, re-downloaded another one and bam, it works. I'm using foobar2000.

For a cheaper hardware option you can get a Blackberry phone off of Ebay. Any Blackberry with BB10 OS can play FLAC files right out of the box. No additional apps needed. Use it as you would use an iPod.

For your purposes I would look for a Z10 or Z30.
