during the 1977 New York blackout, a number of looters stole DJ equipment from electronics stores and as a result, the hip hop genre, barely known outside of the Bronx at the time, grew at an astounding rate from 1977 onward

So yeah I suppose it's music, but I think they are by far the least talented, overall, out of all the genres. Most (probably upwards of 95%) don't play any sort of instrument, nor do any type of "singing", basically just talk in rhythm over a computer generated beat. Big deal.
So someone who can wrote words that moves you is less a musician that taylor swift you cant write shite, but is pretty and can sing ok?

Wow @ this thread 1st of all
It is undoubtedly musical in nature and the varying genres prove that.
Anyone who has listened to Guru's Jazzmatazz or Broken Arrow by Blackalicious or either of Jurassic 5's full albums any of those examples show as much or more musical talent than any of the other genres anyone can bring to the convo.
There are trash artists in the "rap" genre just as there are in any other genre.
None of that takes away from the fact that there is an amazing amount of music in a lot of the hip hop genre.

It's one of my favorites and I'm not ashamed. But im very picky. I don't like 99% of radio rap.

Yes. Those who say 'no', I question your understanding of music.

Not only is music, it is the most important development in pop music of the past 50 years.
