If Johnny's really that good, when's he gonna challenge Eugene "Lightning Boy" Martone?

. . . then why'd he steal Vassar Clement's song?

The devil always tells the truth, just not the whole truth. He only lies by omission. He may bend the rules and search for loopholes, but he cannot break them. A deal is a deal. He may attempt to sabotage it, but the letter of the terms of the deal will be honored.

What's funny is that the devil's riffing is clearly actually superior.

Certainly the bass line is.

From Ray Wylie Hubbard

quote:

I said, "You know that song that Charlie Daniels did? "About how you went down to Georgia and played fiddle against that kid?" He said, "Yeah, it broke my heart but, you know, what're you gonna do?" I said, "To tell you the truth, I thought your solo was the better of the two"

It does sound better thus the Devil should have won. They should have made it sound much worse.

On purpose. Giving Johnny a fiddle made of gold has as predictable a result as letting him win the lottery. Within 2 years Johnny was addicted, divorced, bankrupt, and had lost all his friends. It was purely an evil thing to do.

Maybe Johnny became a good country writer, though.

Devil came back for a rematch 10 years later. Johnny kicked his butt again.
