Jammin to this at gym. Forgot how good this was. Better than what came afterwards.

One weird observation. After listening to Nirvana and what came after, it sounds kind of primitive and simple

I agree, but Pyromania is a damn good album too.

Just went back and listened to High & Dry. I have Pyromania on a Spotify playlist, it's been years since I listened to High, its definitely not as good as Pyromania to me.

They were practically teenagers when they recorded High 'n Dry.

I'm not sure it was better than Pyromania, but it is a damned fine album - absolute proof that the boys from Sheffield were NOT hair metal. They weren't glam metal. They were NWOBHM and kind of went with a more melodic sound as they aged (along with tailoring the music for the market - nothing wrong with a little capitalism).

And they could play with anyone you could name.

I bought this album in ‘81 as an 18 year old teenager by mostly 18 year old teenagers. Was blown away by the maturity of their compositions. Amazing hard rock album where every song is better than the next. This for me was their masterpiece. Always longed for them to go back to this rock/metal style.

High and Dry was awesome. One of those cassettes (great driving album) almost every 16-22 year old had at the time.

Leonard?

You know, you can edit the title of a thread, even after you start it.

And yeah, it's got some great songs. Pyromania is hard to top, as a whole.

Def Leppard was a completely different band when Rick Allen had two arms. After the accident they had to drastically change up their sound. Both versions are great but I prefer the 1st 3 albums.

I used to think that until I figured out that the drums in Pyromania were all programmed. Mutt produced live drummers in the 1970s and up to and including Rick Allen on High 'n Dry - but he insisted on drum programming for Pyromania and Hysteria, because he wanted to do the drums last (which you can still do live with a click track). I can't argue with the results - Pyromania remains my favorite album some 35 years later.

People forget about Side 2 of Hysteria. Everyone knows the hits, but there are other great songs on that album. It stands up to Pyromania.

Bon Scott-era AC/DC and the High & Dry album are what taught me how to play rock guitar. Straight forward, effective and advanced in their simplicity. I am forever indebted to them. High & Dry will always be my favorite Lep album for what it gave me.

Willis used Hamer Standards straight into the amp (Marshall 800). Clark (with the recording contract could finally afford real Gibson Les Pauls, not Ibanez ) used a Morley volume booster and a Cry Baby.

That's it - medium gain, minimal effects (none for Willis) and there is nowhere to hide. You have to play it to get it.

(ETA: and Willis was about 5'4", 115 pounds, so the Hamer Standard was bigger than he was )
