Yeah, I know it is a flippant thread title. That's how I deal with this shite. Jeff Beck, Wayne Shorter, and now Lindley, 2023 is sucking for my musical collection just like every other year since about 2015 has sucked for my music collection.

I hate his El Lay Yacht Rock playing of the '70s, but...

Very much so

The only person in that school I can stand is Warren Zevon, and his albums would be much better w/o Lindley.

Actually the rhythm section on Zevon records is pretty sluggish as well, but that's another thread...

Yes he is, although he is confusing this genre of music with "yacht rock", and they're somewhat different things (although broadly part of the larger "West Coast sound", it's really too big for a single genre/sub-genre).

Kafka's really cool and hip, though.

, never change. Guys like Bob Glaub, Leland Sklar, Jeff Porcaro, Russ Kunkel, John McVie and Mick Fleetwood were a bunch of posers, right?

Their playing is better than it sounds

I don't like the L.A. rock scene of the '70s (I differ it from the country-rock scene of the late '60s). Not to get too poetic, but the beat became heavy (handed) everywhere.

If you want to get truly academic you can theorize this was MOR rock's answer to the heavy thud of metal, but much more radio-friendly w/o dominant electric guitars, or instead using Lindley-style (NOT Cooder) slide

My own favorite example is actually a Frisco band, Clover. They happened to be in England with their boring lead singer Huey Lewis, when they backed a new singer on his first album. That singer, Elvis Costello, would release a second album with his new band The Attractions a few months later. The playing is astronomically more energetic, especially that of drummer Pete Thomas.

I don't really understand what you're saying. You just literally "hate" the vast melodies and harmonies that Lindley and Browne created together? Are you saying it lacked even technical proficiency?

"Technical proficiency" isn't my god. I don't like Lindley's slide sound. I don't like Eddie Van Halen's guitar sound. I don't care how technically proficient they are.

I exaggerated a bit w/my "hate" of Browne -- some his early things, notably "Doctor My Eyes", are pleasant pop (although I definitely wish somebody with some actual white trash spirit had done "Redneck Friends").

I admit I have something of a grudge against Lindley for what he did to Warren Zevon. Even with Lindley WZ's '76 album is still one of my all time faves. But I can only pine for what might have been... If only WZ could have cut it in Nashville or even England, with livelier session men and a more vibrant production.

It's not mine either. You missed my point. I was asking if you were saying - on top of their sound - that they were also actually incompetent technically.

So it's "pleasant pop" you are out for? The whole idea is that Late for the Sky is a beautiful work of art, for beyond pop.

Seriously, you listen to Farther On that I linked earlier from that album or For a Dancer (where Lindley plays a haunting fiddle throughout + solo), and your legitimate reaction to it is "I don't like Lindley's sound"? Certainly you are just being intentionally sour now, right?

This seems silly. Either you like what comes out of the speaker or you don't. Who gives a shite what someone did on some other recording.

We found the Jackson Browne fan

When you get down to it, yes. I certainly prefer it to portentous, pretentious, and just plain entious Dylan imitators.

But this is still free country, comrade. You continue to be enjoying your Rock of Yacht.

I was lucky enough to see Lindley at Proud Larry’s in Oxford back in the 90’s. He played everything from a Sitar to pedal steel. Of course he was rocking one of his classic leisure suits as well! Never forget that show…RIP El Rayo!!!!
