Hunky Dory is another fantastic album to check out.

That's probably my favorite album of his. It knocked me on my arse when I first heard it 10-15 years ago.
The Berlin trilogy also has its supporters (Lodger, Heroes, Low). Those records are a lot frostier and electronic than his glam-rock stuff.
Scary Monsters is kind of a blend of the glam and Berlin stuff. There's some great stuff on that album -- "Ashes to Ashes", "Fashion", "Scary Monsters", "It's No Game"

Had the David Bowie radio station running for 2 days on Google music and I could kick myself for not setting it up sooner. It's been fantastic. Lou Reed, Bryan ferry, talking heads, joy division..

Great station!

Blue jean playing right now

Thanks to this thread, I've discovered that I like Bowie a lot more than I thought I would. I always liked some of his big hits, like Changes, Under Pressure, and Space Oddity, but I never bothered to listen to any of his albums
.

I feel the same way, and was feeling a little guilty about being a "bandwagon" fan just because he died, but then realized that I was busy living life in the '70's & '80's and didn't listen to albums, especially not concept albums. My musical knowledge consisted of Top 40 radio only. Sad that it took his death for me to really appreciate his music, but better late than never I guess.

He was important but this is ridiculous

Not even close to ridiculous. He was the most important. Certainly of the past 50 years when you exclude Elvis. McCartney's void would have been filled to some extent. The Smiths, The Cure, U2, glam rock, grunge.... None of that happens or shapes music the way it did without Bowie. All of the "crap music today" that old ignorant idiots reference can be traced to Bowie.

Obviously, the Beatles were important. But in a relative sense, I just think of them as beating out the competition that would have inevitably filled that role. Maybe The Monkees, Rolling Stones, some other band, whatever..... If Bowie didn't do what he did, I don't think his "replacements" like Lou Reed would have been able to appeal to so many in such a way. He somehow made it cool for people who didn't self identify as weirdos to respect musicians dressed as girls. He may not have left us with a greater catalogue of songs than any other, but his "influence over replacement" is unparalleled. Theres no guarantee somebody else would have taken flamboyancy to the masses in a positive way. I think its pretty safe to say big band crooners wouldn't have prevailed even without the Beatles. A change was gonna come no matter what.

Please. I'm a Bowie nut, but nobody combined brilliant musicianship, brilliant songwriting, melody, harmony, song structure and Zeitgeist like the Beatles. We don't have to diminish their greatness to honor Bowie. The Monkees weren't going to be the Beatles if John and Paul had passed in the night.I completely agree that anybody who knows the history of rock and roll, puts Bowie in the top tier for the reasons you say, particularly his massive influence. It's hard for people in their 30's to get that because they don't see how A led to Z.

God bless David Bowie. This one wrecked me in a way I wasn't expecting. It's hard to see the legends go, because nobody will or can ever fill the void.

I said in a relative sense. The Monkees outsold the Beatles and Rolling Stones combined at their peak. They didn't have the artistic value or anything, but my point is that The Beatles didn't single handidly make the scene they were in. They just shaped it. There would have still been a similar scene without them, IMO.

Also, McCartney is just one part. Keep in mind I brought them up because he is the obvious competition. So I basically said he's 2nd, but the reason I think Bowie is more influential is because, relative to Bowie, Paul would have had a talented imitator fill his shoes, although less optimally.

I thought Bowie had some decent songs. I respect what he did as a visual and performance artist, as well as some interesting and unique melodic twists, but not so much as a vocalist or lyricist. I guess I just don't get all the "one of the greatest of all time" accolades. Sometimes I think people just think being weird is a great accomplishment.

That said, I also differ with quite a bit of conventional wisdom about whom "the greatest" are. Bowie has always been on my list of "Most Overrated" along with:

Neil Young
Bruce Springstein
Eric Clapton
U2
REM

I've never cared much for "Space Oddity", but to be fair most rock lyrics look like doggerel in print

You'll find someone who hates something. No one and nothing is immune. Bowie was one of a kind, I feel sorry for those who don't "get him"

Do you understand the context? He's looking from space at Earth realizing he's helplessly resigned to his fate of floating around in space, never able to get back.

The lyrics to that song are incredible.
