Clutch may only be playing clubs but they've had a successful 25 year career with no signs of stopping. They still have the original lineup too. Where will Imagine Dragons or Tame Impala or one of these other flavor of the month bands be in 25 years? Radio is for hit singles. Good rock bands are more concerned about the whole album.

Completely forgotten if it were up to me. I just want to be able to hear more music like Clutch and less like Imagine Dragons on my radio. Is that really a crazy opinion?

Is it really strange to ask why the radio pushes stuff like Tame Impala and “I Can Make Your Hands Clap” while stuff like Clutch and Devin Townsend never get airplay?

You need to watch more of Jean Paul Gaster's drumming.

Exactly what I was going to say as well. Gaster is absolutely phenomenal.

All they're interested in is the crap that they know the ignorant masses will lap up and keep them listening. I love Clutch's DIY approach. They have owned their own record label for nearly ten years now and obviously release all of their material on it. They do this because they want to make music the way they want to make it and not the way a bigger label may want them to. That is some refreshing integrity from a band who could probably be quite a bit bigger if they made music for mass consumption and radio popularity.

He’s a good drummer, but he’s no world beater. He’s not some uber talented technical drummer like Neil Peart, but he plays some really fun stuff and does it all very very well. I know at least three drummers in the Baton Rouge area that are all arguably better instrumentalists, but Clutch’s drummer isn’t just trying to show off, everything he does fits perfectly into what his band is trying to do and elevates it. I may know a lot of better technical drummers, but they’re not better musicians. He knows exactly when to hit hard, when to back off and let others shine, when to groove and when to ride. His fills were always tasteful, completely on point with what the moment called for. Like I said, the band is better than the sum of its parts. They all fit together flawlessly. You can tell that they’ve been playing together for 20+ years. They communicate effortlessly on stage and instinctively know exactly what every member is doing at every moment.

I often deride metal bands for committing the sin of musical masterbation. They focus so hard on creating insanely technical and creative works, but put together, they don’t make very good music. Those brilliant little mixed meter truncated phraising dicotomizing tripolet over duple feels may be insanely difficult to do, but if it’s not utilized musically, it’s just intricate noise. Simple performed and harnessed flawlessly is always going to be better than complex done haphazardly.

Clutch was pure straight simple rock and roll done to perfection like a well-oiled machine.

Ryan van Poederooyen was the best drummer last night and it wasn’t close. Elite technical chops as well as being just right in the pocket all night.

Ryan Van Poederooyen is tough to follow. It's not a mistake that he tops lists of best prog drummers.

I know it feels cool to say that at times, but if you truly haven’t heard of him, you aren’t all that clued into the metal or prog scene.

Not a huge prog fan but I've been listening to Devin since about 2003. Gene Hoglan is a far superior drummer.

I didn't care for Devin Townsend's music. I would have rather listen to him crack a bunch of weird bodily function based jokes than any of the rest of it. Totally opposite of what I like in rock music style-wise.

Oh okay. Yeah he’s just your basic, run-of-the-mill “good” drummer.

Yeah. Sure you do.

Gene is a beast, but I honestly can't agree here. Frankly, they are so different as drummers, you can really compare them. Gene is the blast-master. Ryan is more varied in his drumming. He's more along the lines of a Gavin Harrison in his style.

Whatever style you like, he's probably done it.

I prefer clutch over devin townsend and it's not really even close. clutch's drummer while perhaps not on the same tech level as ryan, I think he is a better rock drummer. I enjoyed them more for sure.

although I have to say that may have been the first mosh pit i've seen in at least 10 years.
