Saw him in Biloxi at the IP last year. I’m not a big country or southern rock fan, but I was in a concert mood and wasn’t going to miss the chamce to see an icon. Was not disappointed. Fantastic show and that man loves him some US of A.
RIP.
RIP.

R.I.P.
This guy's vitality was touring & performing. He had more left in the tank. I believe very much that taking the road & stage away hastened the end.
Just to add, a lot of people that haven't seen him live don't know that he was as proficient on guitar as he was on fiddle.
Godspeed

Same day that Ennio Morricone dies. Now that will make one hell of an interesting soundcheck at the pearly gates.

He was a session guitar and bass player, his big break probably came when he was in the studio on Dylan's Nashville Skyline Album. Things happened for him pretty fast after that.

quote:A former company hired him to play a private concert on a farm outside of Nashville back in the mid-nineties (Part of a 3 day vendor convention) Having been a fan since Fire on the Mountain days .it was awesome to literally walk right up to the low stage and watch him play.

I saw him in 1983 at Astroworld. My brother and I were about 50' from the stage and there was a cute girl to my left that I danced with most of the show. Never even talked to her. Great show all around!

Saddle Tramp —
Well you pass around the pipe
And you all get high
You never even stop and wonder why
Maybe it's because you want to die
Maybe it's just the way things have to be
Well you stay up late
And you drink too damn much whiskey
You know that sort of thing is kind of risky
Maybe it's just because you like to feel frisky
Maybe it's just because you like to feel free
Saddle tramp, how many people watch you riding by?
Like a thunder cloud that floats across the Arizona sky
And wonder if they're looking at a mighty happy man
Or just a lonely breeze
That drifts across the endless desert sand
Well it's getting kinda cold in Readosa
Abilene ain't getting any closer
One more drink, one more hand of poker
Because a fool and his money's going to have to part
You're too proud to ever show your sorrow
You don't steal and you won't beg or borrow
You may be here today but you're gone tomorrow
There ain't no strings
On your boot heels or your heart
Saddle tramp, how many people watch you ride away?
Wonder why you never promise to come back some day
Maybe thinking you were holding
All the pieces in your hand
Or are they slipping through your fingers
Like the endless desert sand?
Got to be one of his best songs.

He use to do a show on New Year's Eve, every year in our town, back in the 70s, so I saw him lots of times. Usually had Marshall Tucker Band with them, so those were great shows. One year, It was The Winter Brothers, Marshall Tucker, a band called The Cabe Brothers, and Charlie Daniels Band, that was a great show.
