Arguably the 2nd biggest sellout album in music history after Load, yet an oddly satisfying punctuation mark on the grunge era. 20+ years later and I’m still not entirely sure how to feel about it.

Depending on who you ask, Ride the Lightning was the sellout album.

I think it’s a fricking fantastic record. Malibu, Reasons to Be Beautiful are great tracks. I dunno if it’s a sellout record - it’s polished as hell but it fits in with Live Through This. Too bad the band imploded and Courtney Love looks like a Real Housewife now.

Album is the epitome of anything but. Anyone who thinks this must get envious at toast. I have met some Metallica snobs who have said such about ...And Justice for All but damn Ride the Lightning is heavy and dark as hell.

He is referring to Metallica fans being pissed that Fade to Black was basically considered a ballad at that time & the Kill Em All die hards were not happy about that song.

I see that. But Fade to Black is about the furthest from a true ballad I ever heard (I am not aiming at you nor him...I know yall do not feel that way). I think it is honestly one of the heaviest songs they did even though it may not allow one to thrash like Battery or Hit the Lights.

It was an 80s mentality that metal bands shouldn't have slow songs. I guess they forgot about Black Sabbath and Judas Priest doing slow stuff before that.

Always wondered if Cobain wrote the songs for Hole. Not a lot of post Kurt stuff from them.

That was always the rumor, but I think that was mainly caused by people hating Courtney Love. (Just like there are idiots who say she killed Kurt Cobain. The guy started talking about suicide as a teen. He was hard-wired to be miserable.) Besides, Nirvana and Hole were totally different in terms of lyrics. I love Nirvana, but the songs are about masculinity, body horror and suicide.

The reason there wasn't a lot of post-Kurt Cobain Hole songs is that Courtney Love jumped head first into drug addiction and trying to make it as an actress.

Everyone knows Billy Corgan wrote Live Through This. Courtney was cheating on Kurt with him at the time and he was always in the studio with her.

I think Frances Bean was raised by one of Kurt Cobain's relatives, like an aunt or something. It is astonishing to see that she turned out to be a fairly normal, low profile person.
