the mix on the first few songs was terribly muddled .... show got progressively better, but there was a general sense of malaise in the building. Was glad to hear the oldie "In the Morning" ...

The crowd was healthy for what felt like a hastily planned reunion tour with a band that as sonically powerful as they sound in the studio have a hard time matching it live these days .... especially with three members.

I thought they played it? Maybe the second hand Mary Jane made me confused.

I wouldn't really call it a "reunion tour" as they never broke up and have been touring pretty regularly for as long as I can remember. It sucks about it being a 3 piece, and honestly, that extra guitar is needed. I saw them a few years ago ( SXSW 2012)and they were a 5 piece band then and they sounded as good as ever.

I saw them last summer and they fricking rocked. Extremely tight set. They played some of my favorites though (randy described eternity, going against your mind, carry the zero, the plan, etc).

...and they had more than three members. Did something change?

I can see them losing a lot without that 2nd and 3rd guitar. When Ive seen them, the 3rd guitarist (the one with the long hair and often a beard) played atmospherics while Doug played lead and the other guy rhythm.

I found a mention of the new 3 man lineup in this article... LINK

quote:

Martsch intentionally — as he often has over the years — left Built to Spill's other two regular members, guitarists Jim Roth and Brett Netson, out of the studio to concentrate on working with the new members and to pursue a more raw and stripped-down sound. "It was totally reinvigorating, for sure," says Martsch. "Just playing some different styles was kind of exciting. Everyone's not playing the same thing over and over again, but people have their go-to techniques and sound or whatever, and it's exciting to play with people who have different kinds of ideas. Mostly it's just exciting that it worked out at all, that this was a cool band."

That's pretty close to what I had, but they played Kicked in the Sun in the place of Twin Falls I believe. And I Would Hurt a Fly was the first encore song.

It actually went like this:
All Our Songs
Goin' Through
Living Zoo
In the Morning
On the Way
Hindsight
Understood
Kicked It in the Sun
C.R.E.B.
So
Another Day
Alright
Horizon to Cliff
Carry the Zero
Encore:
I Would Hurt a Fly
Never Be the Same
Time Trap
