I saw the Temptations and the Four Tops last year. I don’t care if they had one original member in each band. They sounded awesome. That soul music with an orchestra behind them is the shiznizzle.

Kids today don’t play instruments, can’t read sheet music, didn’t take chorus,etc..

Long live Motown, ARS, Stax, Philly Soul,etc..

At least we have Neo Soul,etc..

Some of the best music every recorded with very talented, authentic, musicians.

Today, all of those attributes I listed above are shunned by "pop culture". Talentless, fake idiots that make up rhymes about violence, whores, drugs, constantly using a word they literally cry over if a white person repeats, etc over someone else's music. Just pathetic.

Motown was a combination of time and place. It won't happen again.

He's not wrong, and if you look at it at a really high level, the degradation of not only the city of Detroit, but the music and culture that created that music is all going downhill. This all happened, successfully (it was done intentionally) within a couple of generations.

Just sad all the way around.

I agree with a lot of this, as far as the average population goes. People don't seem to be as naturally musical in person as they used to be, because we don't interact like we used to.
It used to that, almost everybody I knew could play at least a little something on a guitar. Is that still the case?
On the other hand though, The kids thatare playing are technically better, by a bunch.

The problem is, they are not out there in the wild playing with other people for the most part. They are just making YouTube videos in their bedroom. Maybe I’m just old, but I don’t see the appeal. I just can’t really get my rocks off playing in the house by myself. Need to be playing music along with others. That is the happy place.
It wasn’t just the great musicians that made Motown (or the Wrecking Crew, Stax, or Muscle Shoals) great, it was the collaboration.

It also could be our fault. How many kids are you inviting to come over and play in your garage, while you sit out there with the parents drinking beer? That used to be a goodtime, but everybody has their phones and shite now..

Joan Osborne doing What Becomes of the Broken Hearted was incredible. I had no idea she had lungs like that and the Funk Brothers are still tight as hell

An '80s book claimed he taught himself after becoming famous

However in the Larry King interview he was still saying he couldn't

For that matter, the whole music industry has changed, not just the Motown/ R&B genre. Radio stations were king from 1960 - 1980. Independent radio stations in large markets could introduce new bands to listeners, just because an individual DJ liked them (of course, this lead to pay-olla).
Now, 90% of all radio stations are owned by large media corporations.

I saw a recent interview where he said he couldn’t read music and never needed to.
