Brad Paisley: Welcome to the future "Wake up Martin Luther" WTF?

I'm very troubled about this verse:
Did he mean to reference the leader of the protestant reformation? Does he not know the difference b/tw Martin Luther and Martin Luther King Jr.?
I don't listen to pop country all that often so maybe this is the norm. But did the songwriter(s), the publishing company, the guys in the studio, the A&R guy, the engineer(s), producer, promo team at record company, session players (and hundreds of others in the music industry) including Brad Paisley also not know the difference between Martin Luther and Martin Luther King Jr? How in the hell was this song released with that big of an error.
My wife thinks they knew - they just didn't care. I don't think so. They could have easily worked "king" in there somehow.
Any ideas? Has anyone else notices this?

Yeah, I get that, but it's wrong.
Also, there's plenty of room in there. Having been a songwriter for many moons AND having lived in Nashville for several years, I'm POSITIVE they could have worked "King" in there somehow and still made it work.

His listeners don't know the difference. so why not keep the rhyme for the less intelligent folk?

I think you are making a mountain out of a molehill. It is extremely obvious from the context of the rest of the lyrics who he was referring to. There are hundreds of songs that refer to famous people by their first or first and middle names. It isn't an "error" that they don't know the difference between the two people.
And like someone else noted, they are rhyming with "future". Sure maybe there are ways to work in a lyric with "Martin Luther King Jr.", but if they chose to just use "Martin Luther", who cares.

Good one. But James Dean also was know as Jimmy Dean (there are also other songs (by David Essex for example) that reference Jimmy Dean). Martin Luther King Jr. didn't go by Martin Luther ever to my knowledge.

Could never hate him cause he can play guitar with just about anyone on the planet. But his songwriting over the past 5 years has been miserable. Minus one or two he's written some pretty dumb songs.
And to the OP:
Dude he is just rhyming. But I do agree he could have worked harder to get King in there. Ever heard his song Then.
"Now you're my whole life, now you're my whole world. I just can't believe the way I feel about you girl."...quite possibly the worst lyric of a song. Ever
