Boston fans, tell me about Tom Scholz

All you have to know about the first Boston record is that Tom did it all basically himself, and then the record company come back with more money and told him to redo it, he took their money, did nothing, the record co. released it as they originally received it, and those tracks are what we are referencing almost fifty years later.

Am I the only one that doesn't know a single person in Boston's actual name?

I challenge anyone to name another occasion where two bands from the same city put out debut albums within two years of each other and practically every song on both albums got boo-coo radio play. Boston and The Cars are the only time I can think of that it has ever happened.

The original demo of the eponymous album was almost 100% Tom Scholz on all instruments (there were bits and pieces from other collaborators on the demo, but didn't amount to much in the grand scheme of things).

The only thing that remains a mystery to me is the drums. Scholz can/has played physical drums, obviously, but he was also a genius with recording/mastering/dubbing, so I'm not certain if he recorded the drums at concert tempo, played them at half-speed or multi-tracked the fills, used programming for what he couldn't play or what have you.

As it is - pretty much the entire thing was "re"-recorded prior to release and don't sound very different at all from the demos, even the drums and keyboards (perceived to be Scholz's "weakest" instruments).

I don't know why he doesn't get more press along with the great multi-instrumentalists (McCartney, Winwood, Prince, John Paul Jones) - he's certainly as good a guitar player as any of those. Prince and Winwood would be unquestionably better on the keys, but we're really only talking a matter of a few degrees. But, then Prince relied mostly on drum programming and was not a true drummer in his own right. McCartney and Winwood probably a little more credible on drums than Prince. John Paul Jones wasn't really a drummer, but could play anything with strings, plus keys and some exotic instruments (bass recorder, anyone?).

All of those guys are great producers, too, so that is something most great multi-instrumentalists have in common.
