The Lousiana Purchase of 1803 brought nearly a million acres of new land to the United States of America, spreading as far afield as Montana. Working out to about three cents an acre, the purchase continues to pay outrageous dividends, not least in the form of the rich and diverse cultural heritage of the state of Louisiana, which became the 18th state of the Union in 1812. The birthplace of jazz, the state has also given us Cajun and zydeco music and its own brands of blues, country, funk and hip hop, and the place can even make a strong case as the original home of rock & roll. Here are 18 songs that have helped define the rapturous music of the 18th state

Callin' Baton Rouge or bust

Bias much? Every song on that list comes from below I-10. Any list without Oak Grove's Tony Joe White is not legit Polk Salad Annie

Did Louisiana 1927 make the list? If not,
ETA: "A Milli" by Lil Wayne makes it and Louisiana 1927 doesn't?! frick that.

There are many more songs in her catalog that are better examples of "Louisiana"

No "Raw Meat" by the Shitdogs?

I'm sorry, but any Louisiana collection that doesn't include
Mathilda
is simply NOT definitive.
"Mathilda" is the very epitome of swamp pop, and the standard at so many weddings and other events in southern Louisiana that hearing it again evokes powerful memories of family, times, events.
Long live this mighty classic.

Yeah I can't believe they put Lil Wayne on there.
LAME.
If there HAS to be a Hip Hop artist in there, hell I'd rather have DJ Jubilee or even Master P before Lil Wayne.
This really should be in there before Lil Wayne, as this song/beat spawned the entire NOLA Bounce Genre:

There's a "NOLA bounce genre"?
This was my first hearing of that and surely the last. Sorry, but rap just doesn't sound "Louisiana". It's not unique. It's not indigenous. It's copycat.

You've honestly never heard or New Orleans Bounce Music???
Wow. Do you even live in South Louisiana?
I'm not saying Bounce is great, but it is a Louisiana thing. Like it or not.
