I’m sure most would agree that Sam Cooke is a legend with the kind of voice that will never be forgotten. How many of you would agree that Sam Cooke is the greatest soul singer of all?

Sam is great but I prefer Otis Redding.

This isn't the MSB.

Not everything is a competition.

Please, no wagering.

I liked him as a singer, but that's where it ends.

He's was a racist scumbag that was also a rapist.

What? I hope you aren't talking about his killing. He was set up. Also, he is my favorite soul singer and clearly one of the best.

He's great. He's Rod Stewart's fav singer and he performs 'Having A Party' in concert a good bit. I think I may lean a bit more towards Otis though. Sam was ahead of his time as far running his business.

With that said, seeing as how Allan Klein was involved with him and was about to be either cut out or minimized I wouldn't be a bit surprised that Klein had something to do with his death. Klein is the reason the Stones don't have rights to their songs or recorded material prior to 1971. It was Klein's contract that also kept us all from a live album of the '72 tour with side one the opening act Stevie Wonder and the next three sides the Stones. Jagger wouldn't have pissed on Klein if he were on fire. It was only after Klein's death that the Stones worked with Klein's son and the company ABKCO to release a comprehensive greatest hits collection.

Amen

I love Sam Cooke, but there are so many greats, you should just try to appreciate them all.

Who told you that? The Remastered doc on Netflix? They should call that show "Rewrite history". Just about every episode that I've seen was playing very loose with the facts.

Rewatch the episode on Jam Master Jay. The facts in that case have came out since that episode was filmed.

Love the Live at Harlem Square album. One of my favorites ever, esp the original version.

I've never seen that show.

I also believe it was a setup. most likely a "Murphy game" (where a man is lured to a motel room to be robbed) that went wrong.

But I wouldn't put anything past Allen Klein. He had established a company in Cooke's name but which Klein actually controlled. He pulled this same con on the Rolling Stones. Keith Richards called their time with Klein "$25,000,000 worth of experience".

Klein was also connected to the infamous Morris Levy, who ordered the savage beating of pop singer Jimmie Rodgers, who was demanding an accounting of his royalties.

The idea that a music industry executive would commit an act of violence on an artist is hardly inconceivable.

So, the motel owner, who was on the phone with the hotel manager while she was being attacked by Cooke, was lying? The hotel manager and Cooke's victim too?

I'm familiar with Morris Levy and what he did to bands like Badfinger, but I still can't find any sympathy for Sam Cooke. He died doing what he loved to do.

I haven't seen any of the Netflix docs. Don't need to. Its been pretty widely accepted he up a hooker and took her to a hotel she suggested. She grabbed his clothes and wallet (oops) and fled the room. He confronted the manager who was supposedly in on the scheme to defraud johns. She shot him.

Sam Cooke is in the top 3 for me.

Marvin Gaye had the best range and is, IMO, the greatest soul/R&B tenor vocalist of all time.

Cooke and Redding are a 2a and 2b on his heels.

All mentioned above were great but I’ll throw in a name that’s not mentioned enough that is that’s the late great Johnnie Taylor. He’s influences were Cook and Redding and their careers mimicked each other. I don’t think he gets as much fame as the others but he was a great showman and very talented singer.
He could do it all.

Al Green, Luther Vandross, Ronald Isley, and Teddy Pendergrass could all make a case.

It's hard for me to pick a favorite, but it's definitely not Sam Cooke.

Al Green..that's a big old counter, to the OP. I didn't think about him..damn that guy is great, and not just a singer,, incredible guitar player. Love the way he played, and I've heard people talk, that got to play with him some, and they loved the guy.
The great thing about threads like this, you get thinking about some other acts, and a guy that I knew a bit..Percy Sledge, great singer and hell of a cool guy. I wish that I had been a better writer, back when I was getting to be around him some...to hear him sing one of my songs maybe, that would have been so cool.
