The lyrics of "If you could read my mind" by Lightfoot and "Time in a bottle" by Croce are some of my favorites ever.
Overall. Who was the better songwriter?

I like both. However, I enjoy Jim Croce's songwriting more.

Damn, this is the only one of these I've seen where I refuse to take a side.

So far people favor Croce though.

You don't mess around with Jim.

Croce for me: Photographs & Memories, New York's Not My Home, Time In A Bottle, It Doesn't Have To Be That Way, Hey Tomorrow.... in addition to the ones most everyone knows.

This is a great place to recommend Cold on the Shoulder by Tony Rice. Not all Lightfoot covers but several by the bluegrass master flatpicker. Awesome album

may be my favorite song ever. If it's not, then I'll Have to Say I Love You in a Song is. For my money, songwriting doesn't get any better than what came from Jim Croce's pen.

I tend to lean towards this camp, although I like Edmund Fitzgerald better than all of Croce's songs. But, I like most of Croce's songs better than the rest of Lightfoot's songs.
If that makes sense.

Very big fan of both, but I believe Croce is the better songwriter.

Prob Croce, but Lightfoot is not far behind.
