And it's not close

I remember the first time I heard this song, someone talked the DJ to play it at one of my elementary school dances. I guess it was the first single GnR put out because I hadn't heard of them at the time, and it had only been on the air for maybe a week. I was floored by it. I remember some of the teachers and chaperons freaked out when it played. But that was the minute I decided to stop listening to the radio/one hit wonder crap that was on FM radio at the time, and started listening to GnR, Metallica, AC/DC, the heavier rock bands, and "hair" bands like Poison and Skid Row.

Gold record says otherwise.

I'm not a fan of the song...like my post read, these are some of the 80's anthems.

I knew someone would have something to say about that. Yes, I know...it's metal. I realize Battery, Leper Messiah, Trapped Under Ice, Eye of the Beholder, etc. etc. are all metal. "One" is not a strictly metal song. Why else would MTV play it and it win their award? Metal and rock are often closely related. "One" became a mainstream hit. Of course, someone had to be uber-technical about it.

Metallica falls in the "in between" category IMO. Songs like Enter Sandman and Until it sleeps are more rock that metal i would say.

Why did you omit The Police? Every Breath You Take deserves mention.

Sun King - The Cult

I think Love Removal Machine was the big single from that album (maybe Fire Woman?).

Also, that first single from Love was watershed stuff....

some of you are deviating heavily from "Rock Single."

1a AC/DC You Shook Me All Night Long
1b GNR Welcome to the Jungle

They're neck and neck IMO.
