I went to a modest mouse show back in the day, and the band that opened for them stole the show tbh. Man Man. they went flat out, and we all had a great time.

Stone Temple Pilots opening for Ministry at State Palace Theater back in '92
It was supposed to be Helmet, Sepultura and Ministry. Helmet's tour bus crashed on way to NOLA, so Ministry brought in some unknown band to fill in at the last minute. Metal band comes out with a bald, tatted up shirtless singer who opens the show with a megaphone and something about dead roses. By the end of their set the entire place was loud from the cheers. They won that crowd over.
We went out to buy that CD the next day, but it wasn't out yet. It was a few weeks later when it finally released.

Back in 1980 Louisiana Leroux opened for The doobie brothers at the Centrelplex. They dominated for almost and hour... the doobies had zero chance. When it was encore time more people were calling for Leroux to come back out. It was wild....

in the early 70s at the union theater Batdorf and Rodney were going to open for Jackson Browne. However, they canceled and the Doobie Bros took their place. But Jackson Browne opened because of the difference in energy/style. So Jackson Browne, based on who i still like. other than that, Billy Joel for Elton John.

This is different situation as it was already an established act but Alice Cooper opening for Motley Crue on the Crue’s “Final Tour” in 2015. Alice & his band completely blew Motley off the stage & it wasn’t even close.

Robert Cray opened for Huey Lewis & The News - Tallahassee mid 80's. He killed it.
Spin off- Heard an interview with David Shaw of the Revivalists on 92 ZEW Mobile. He was asked to tell of a funny occurrence while touring. They were in Tuscaloosa for a show and the opening band was playing. He peeked out from backstage and the place was packed. Tells the rest of the band about the crowd and they are all pumped to play. Opening act finishes their set and the crowd bails. Opening act was Alabama Shakes.

Saw Matchbox 20/Dave Matthews/The Smashing Pumpkins all open for the Stones in 1997.
Also thought Panic at the Disco were pretty solid, when they opened for Weezer a few years back.
