I see you and I raise you
Fred Wesley (James Brown) and The J.B.'S - More Peas
Skipped to the good stuff but the whole song is obviously funky as a diaper

James Jamerson or Rocco Prestia....take your pick.
No bass player changed the instrument like Rocco and very few have been able to live up to his ability.
Tower of Power
What Is Hip
Squib Cakes
Only So Much Oil In The Ground
Soul Vaccination
Half the guys mentioned in this thread couldn't play these much less come up with them on their own.
Ain't No Mountain High Enough
Bernadette
What's Going On
For Once in My Life
Fever in the Funk House
Home Cookin'
Verdine White
Shining Star
Wrong answer.
I hate to tell you son but if you don't believe Rocco Prestia's work on What Is Hip isn't one of, it not THE best bass line of all time, you need to ask some professional bass players who he is and about that song in particular..........
You know how I know you're very young? Because you think the bassist from Phish is better than James Jamerson or Rocco Prestia. Now I'm not talking personal taste here, I'm talking sheer level of difficulty. Those are 16th notes he's playing....with his fingers, Junior.

Okay "pa"
I love What Is Hip, and Tower of Power, and nowhere did I claim that Mike Gordon was better than Prestia.
I was really just referring to your comment of

as being the wrong answer because it was an asinine comment.
And I will argue that Jamerson or Prestia would never have been able to come up with bass line to It's Ice.

I Can't Tell You Why - Eagles

Everything about that song is awesome

One of These Nights is the Eagles bassline I immediately thought of.

Only read the first and last page so they may have already been mentioned, but a few of my favorites...
Blue Sky - Allman Brothers. The dueling guitars get all the love, but it has a great bass line as well.
Into the Mystic - Van Morrison
Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys - Traffic
And far from their best song, but have always loved the bass line in Primus's Shake Hands With Beef.

And the original Eagles bassist, Meisner, played this one.
Interesting that Schmit ("I Can't Tell You Why" was his big hit as a singer with The Eagles) - replaced Meisner in Poco (when Meisner left to form The Eagles) and later replaced Meisner in The Eagles. Both excellent bass players, incredible high singers and two of the best background harmony singers of that era - (late 60s to mid 80s).
(ETA: Meisner turned 70 yesterday, in a mental ward since the shooting death of his wife on Sunday.)

From Songfacts: The title is French for "The Brothers In A Minor." The song is an instrumental written by Allman Brothers guitarist Dickey Betts. Gregg Allman recalls in his 2012 biography that they did 29 takes of the song, and used the second one.
This was one of the first songs the band recorded without Duane Allman, who died in a motorcycle accident about four months before this was released.
Berry Oakley's bass line is prominent in the song. Oakley died later that year in a motorcycle accident similar to the one that killed Duane Allman.

While not technically difficult the bass lines in "I'm your Captain" Grand Funk, where great work for that era.

It may not be the best, but my favorite is Disco Inferno.
Especially as incorporated into the opening credits of Kingpin.

Poor guy.
Staying with an Eagle related song, I have always loved the bass line for New York Minute

Many greats have been covered in this thread, those that deserve better praise than my selection. Still, this line, in my mind, earns a degree of adulation.

The Cure -- Fascination Street
That whole album, Disintegration, is bass driven and full of great hooks, with Fascination Street being the crown jewel.
My all time favorite though is Would? from Alice in Chains.
