Mutemath is a pretty good trio, although they don't really exist anymore as a threesome, it's just Paul Meany. I've seen them a couple of times live, they put on a tremendous performance.

Huh? Great band but were never a trio, other than recording Odd Soul. Always a 4 piece band live and on all other records.

Can't believe no one mentioned Mountain.
I'm not a big John Mayer fan but he had a killer trio with Pino Palladino and Steve Jordan.
Jimi's other band, the Band of Gypsies may have rocked even harder than the Experience. Buddy Miles and Billy Cox could really lay it down.
