I realize Southern band gets a lot of well deserved pub for its band and much of it is the presentation, just curious for those who have a clue (I have none) which band has better pure musical talent? Or are they similar which is what I assume.

We (LSU) played with them after each team won their conference in 2003. There was a parade in BR that involved getting both bands together. I don't remember being impressed by their musicality.

Southern's band is not more musically talented than LSU's at marching band ability.
They might be generally musically talented at a different level, but LSU is more like a drum corps with woodwinds, meaning it takes more discipline and ability to make it look so crisp and professional.
Essentially, LSU is classical music while Southern is Jazz.
Both take work and talent, but differing levels of both to be good at what they do. One is more impressive, one is more fun. One is not objectively better than the other, because they essentially play different styles.

Well, LSU has a much larger band and has a much larger enrollment giving them a much larger chance at landing more talented musicians.
Marching band vs. marching band is as someone above commented, way too different styles to say that one band is "better" than the other.
But looking at individual members, LSU has no doubt at all way more talented musicians.

Does the Southern band play that torturous 2 note crap designed to mess with the opponent but manages to make everybody within earshot want to vomit? Does the Southern band play a sadly/comically too fast version of "Eye Of The Tiger"?
As with all music genres, talent doesn't mean much without taste.
