Presence and In Through the Out Door just weren't what the albums before them were. I think they called it quits at the right time.
I agree with this. They just struggled to get to the HEIGHTS as the other albums. YES they were THAT GREAT.

+1
but, I think the band was on the verge of breaking up. Rumors were that Jim Morrison was ready to quit touring and I think the drama with the band would have led them to break up....or at least Morrison walking away. Speaking of that, what in the world were they thinking by releasing albums without Jim Morrison on vocals?

I know. But its a shame they were still FRESH at the time of Jims death. Maybe a few more albums. ALOT of people DO NOT understand just how GREAT of a songwriter Morrison was.

Morrison was an incredible poet and had a way with words. Dude was super deep.

Not a big fan of the Doors, but I can appreciate the songwriting. Morrison was quite the poet. Just not my style.

The Smiths. Strangeways was a tight album, split before the album was released. All 4 albums were top notch.

Sade has produced 6 albums in 30 years. Not nearly enough.

I would say nirvana, but I think what we got from Foo Fighters is better than anything we could have gotten from nirvana today.

Little Feat with Lowell George. After his death they were OK but nothing special.

Jeff Buckley (30) showed some real promise before he accidentally drowned in a channel of the Ms. River.
I wanted more than one finished studio album (Grace).

Creedence Clearwater Revival
Buffalo Springfield
Each of those played a style that would have worked even better as their members aged. CCR & BS could have kept going for decades, easily making music as good as that for which we know them.
