but I don't understand why they were the main cause of a whole socio-cultural explosion.
put it this way: they killed hair metal and knocked michael jackson, madonna, and prince off the charts to take the #1 spot.
for a 3 piece (sometimes 4) rock band, that was something amazing.

These aren't bands I think suck, but they're bands that I'm supposed to like according to people I know, but that I've just never gotten intO:
Sleater-Kinney
Pavement
The Replacements
Of Montreal
Sunny Day Real Estate
The New Pornographers
Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffitti
Pulp
Built to Spill
My Bloody Valentine
Once again, I don't dislike these bands, but they're not bands that I've ever gotten into at the level that people seem to think you're supposed to appreciate them.

some highly recommended music board bands for which i didn't get the hype:
all them witches - band name gets a 9.5/10, but the amateur pentatonic wannabe blues metal songwriting is a 2/10 at best. it's insulting for them to even come into the genre with that kinda game after it's been done so well so many times.
war on drugs - if a lady wanted to put this album on while making love, i'd say sure. but if she wanted to put it on while driving or just hanging out with no sex or drugs involved, i'd politely decline.
real estate - some good stuff, but the delivery is so non-confrontational and white bread, i feel like i'm developing low T when i hear it.
turnpike troubadours - music is fine but the lyrics and song titles are dangerously close to crossing the new country line; lots of those keyword country references about cities, drinks, girls, etc. maybe they're better live, but the albums sound too polished and produced.

I have to agree. It doesn't get any more benign than this. The guitars are nice but it is just so vanilla.

I saw them at the varsity and they were just a wild head trip of a show. I don't care much for their records. seems like a band that you're supposed to take acid to live.

their record lightning at the door is pretty interesting even though it's blues rock. i've seen some live videos of them, and it was much much better.

I don't really like the Black Keys

yeah, not a fan of the black keys newest stuff. their old shite was pretty decent from 05-ish, but it does get old
