Follow up on my vent a few weeks back about the SoundSmith cartridge. There's good news and... odd news.
Good news is I called yesterday and ended up speaking to Peter Ledermann. He checked it out for me and found no issues - zero problem with the cart. Sent me a photo then did some further testing with it mounted to confirm, then boxed it up to return at no charge. So that's the good news.
The odd news part is we got into a discussion about how this erroneous claim was made in the first place. When I told him the local shop and the name of the person who briefly examined it and told me repair was required, there was an "aaaah" and a bit of history was related. Turns out this guy (who is now retired) apparently had a long standing grudge with SoundSmith. He may have also had it out for me as I stated up front the cart was bought elsewhere (at significant discount). I'll likely never know for sure if the mistake was intentional or not. Pretty annoying at best.

This is my first MoFi One step and the guitar sounds amazing. Getting good sound out of an acoustic guitar is so incredibly hard to do, especially live, and I imagine much of the work was done the night of the show, nonetheless, sounds great.

Pheroy—sounds like you will be back in business in short order…good to hear!
Although I’ve never used a moving iron, I do understand their design and operation. Peter Ledermann has rebuilt just about every known brand and type of cartridge on the planet—he ranks up there with the Japanese master builders.
I had a Bang & Olufsen MMC4 cartridge rebuilt by him around 2008 or so (Beogram 1700 table). I’m sure you are aware that a B&O tonearm will only accept a proprietary B&O cartridge, and there aren’t boxes of NOS carts sitting on a shelf at the local Wal-Mart—so rebuild is the only option. My old, beat up B&O MMC4 cart looked like a new cart when it came back to me…pristine work by Soundsmith!
The spec/measurements on your new cartridge look really good—great channel separation, and high output (2.12 mV). It also has a recommended loading of >47k ohms—also known as “wide open”.
Years ago, I used a Lyra Helikon and ran it at >47k ohms load, and got the tightest, snappiest bass I had ever heard from a record.
Did you get the medium or high compliance version?

Marco - looks like the high compliance version is a special order, which I definitely did not do, so I assume it's the medium. I am definitely looking forward to finally getting going with the Aida. I bought it based on Fremer's rave review of the Mk 1 version plus some feedback from VPI owners and others. The high channel separation definitely attracted me because I value imaging & soundstaging very highly. It's going to run through a PS Audio Stellar phono pre which I snagged on sale last fall as the final piece for this analog chain. It's pretty flexible with a range of gain settings for MM/MC plus various loadings for MC if I ever go that way.
I'm only marginally aware of the B&O tables/carts, enough to go "oh yeah" when you mentioned that. I do know Peter is one of the few folks who rebuilds them and the audio world better take advantage of that while it can. He's no spring chicken and nearly left us twice from covid.

Who’s going to jump on this Vinyl opportunity?
Holy shite. That is some serious music collection. And the Infinity IRSs... would love to hear those.

Samantha Fish - Kill Or Be Kind. I streamed this when it came out and it didn't grab me. The vinyl for whatever reason changed my mind - great record.
