I see you enjoy McIntosh equipment quite a lot, what made you decide to go with the Aries player over the McIntosh MT5?
Posted on 4/11/17 at 5:38 pm to JuanGrande
I use McIntosh for power and signal processing.
The MT-5 is a scaled down version of the MT-10, which was released about 8 years ago. It has a thinner platter, different arm, and lacks the blue meters.
That being said, McIntosh does not make most of the parts on their turntables. The arm is an SME in disguise (SME is good stuff though), and the platter and bearing are also outsourced to another large turntable manufacturer (notice the McIntosh platter looks eerily similar to VPI...!!)
Same with their headphones--they are Beyerdynamic Teslas ($1600) with pretty McIntosh ear cups sold for $2000.
The McIntosh MT-5 ($6k) is not a bad table, but it is not in the same league as the VPI Aries 3...nor is their higher priced MT-10 ($10k).
I tend to use gear where the entire piece is made by a single manufacturer in house. McIntosh makes all the parts for their amps and preamps and power filters in house in Binghamton, NY. Same with my Simaudio reference CD player--all circuit boards, transport, and chassis are fabricated in Canada at Simaudio...same with VPI.
Over the years, I have had a plethora of gear from manufacturers around the world and came back to Mac because they are here in the USA. When you have a piece of LAMM, Ayon, FM Acoustics, or Shindo gear (a few of hundreds produced overseas) and it craps out, it has to go back overseas to be repaired and it can take upwards of 8-12 months...and it will crap out over time.

Speaking of gear made in the US, what's your opinion of PS audio? I've been lusting after their BHK 250 amp and the BHK preamp to go with it.

PS Audio is one of the "Colorado group".
There was Boulder Audio that formed about 30 years ago. Their stuff is just amazing, but stupid expensive. They don't change the lines often (18 years for the 20 series to become the 21 series).
A few audio engineers split from Boulder after a few years in and formed Ayre Acoustics in Colorado. There gear's design mimics Boulder's design but not as expensive (still not cheap though).
A couple more split and formed PS Audio--also located in Colorado. They make good gear. The amp and pre you are desiring are their first crack at building such components, but they are not a new company. They have been making digital products for years. They are priced just a little bit under Ayre.
All 3 of these companies started off as affordable alternatives (by high end standards), but as they grew, they started to move into the "push the envelope" in their designs.
Boulder's new 2160 mono bloc amps are $100k, pre amp is $60k, and disc/media player is $60k...15 years ago, you could get the 20 series for 1/3 today's price. That's a cool $240k before speakers, cables, racks, and a turntable!
Ayre seems to have followed Boulder's strategy--all out assault now. Their amps ranged from $3k-$12k a few years ago. Now their mono bloc amps are $30k.
PS Audio is probably next. They have established a name for themselves, have a market, are known now for design and quality, and are made in Colorado.
If you want PS Audio gear, get it soon. It's not cheap, but in the next 7 years, it will double in price.
Case in point...their media player and DAC were $2500 each when released 7 years ago. Now, 2 generations updated, they are $12k.
Why?...well they trudged it out in the early years and now that they have a larger customer base, they can finally make some coin.
But, they do make some really nice gear.
An entire Boulder rig is my end goal, but they just keep on getting more expensive exponentially, and I believe McIntosh gets me 80% to Boulder quality and sound at 1/5 the money.

Kvothe....
Or anyone looking for a good table... (albeit a demo)
Playing around on music direct right now. There is a vpi Nomad demo on there for $599. No need to buy a phono. That's a 1k turntable. I have one and I'm enjoying the hell
out of it...

Holy crap Marco....
No wonder this shite is addictive. Finally, got what I think is the right set up with the speakers.
Took me a bit to figure out what I was gonna use to protect my floor from the spikes.... but I figured it out and then used the vandy instructions and I must say I'm impressed. Tweaked them a bit and the detail and soundstage is crazy. And I don't have a clue what I'm doing or what I was listening for. Just sounds like the music is being sang from the middle of the 2 speakers. Basically, like listening to a concert. Lead singer in the middle and everything else fills in the sides and gaps.
Any good songs to play to see if things are set up good?

A really good synth-pop tune from the '80's is Thompson Twins--Don't mess with Doctor Dream

And don't be afraid to turn the knob to the right--put some volume on it...feel it!

If you want a bunch of stuff flying from right to left and moving around...Roger Waters--Amused to Death.

And if you are having suicidal thoughts...the Cure--Sinking (a great tune-just depressing)

Man.... after what 6-8 months I finally have things fixed up.... for now at least
Getting to enjoy the fruits of the labor and research... well more yours than mine
Sat the wife down and put on isbell's southeastern and about a minute in she says... while I'm explaining what I'm trying to do.... holy shite the music, it's like it's in the middle and not coming from just one side or the other. Like I'm at a good concert!
Guess that's always a plus.....
She has this envie for the buckingham nicks album since she got back from the Stevie nicks concert. Need to find that for the anniversary coming up....
