Anyone had success "thickening" up the sound of their Taylor acoustic?

I got a Taylor 214 acoustic for my high school graduation many moons ago and I have always found that it sounds very sparkly and bright. Its not my favorite sound for a lot of what I typically play, but I don't want to get rid of it for sentimental reasons. Also can't drop $1,000+ for the Martin that I would ideally like.

Anyone have any ideas or string recommendations to thicken up that sound? I have increased my string gauge but it still leaves something to be desired.

Raise the action a little bit, different material nut and saddle. I bet you can take it by fret shack and he can help you out.

Taylors are voiced bright by design and materials. To truly darken it, you will spend more money than you would buying the new Martin.

Some affordable, non-intrusive experiments...

* If you are using 80/20 bronze, try phosphor bronze instead.Silk and steel may be worth a try too.

* If you are using non-coated strings, revert back to coated strings. Your Taylor shipped with Elixirs.

* Experiment with bridge pins. Many folks will tell you they make a difference tonally. Others will say minimal change at best, others will say they are simply an anchor. I just throw the option out there because the jury is split and pins are cheap, readily available, require no mods to install. You be the judge.

The common opinion is the harder the pin, the brighter the tone, and I can buy into that making sense. If your Taylor has ebony pins, try cheap plastic pins first and see if you hear a difference or enough of one to experiment further. Supposedly warlrus jaw bone pins are the darkest but my marketing background as well as my guitar repair/upgrade background leaves me VERY skeptical in regard to ANY claim involving pieces of exotic animals turned into common guitar parts. But some people love that quirky stuff so go for it if you're so inclined.

Yesterday, I played one of the best sounding and playing guitars that I've ever had in my hands. Custom built by a local guy. Mahogany top. It had plastic pins, and he was wanting to replace them with something better. I told him that I wouldn't change anything, but I did notice that the action was higher than I usually like my guitars. I loved the sound of it, and played it for about an hour. I'm wanting that guitar and it's going to cost me.

I think maybe, now that I am getting to be a better player, some of the things that I thought were important before, were really limiting. I noticed that the higher action gave me more of a choice in the sound of my bends and let offs. I love a light action, but I'm not going to be glued to that anymore. I don't really like to use a football analogy for guitar, but there is a point where the game slows down for you. It only took me 45 years to find that out.

I have some PBs I ordered last week that I am planning on putting on it. I'll have to check out the bridge pins.

It would 100% be for sale if it wasn't a gift. I am pretty sure mom and pops wanted me to play in the church group when they got it, but that ship has long sailed

I forgot to mention: Tune down a whole step. I'm slippn.

When you play like in E major, it will really be D major, when you play like D major, it's really C major..etc..

Strings. Strings. Strings.

Stringsbymail.com guitar center has some stuff and I can’t knock daddario or elixir. But that’s the majority of what they have. And for me Elixirs do not like my fingers. They corrode almost immediately. Not their fault, it’s my fingers.

Strings by mail just opens the door to a TON of different strings you’ll never see at GC.

John Pearce, DRs, and all price points. From 5 bucks a set to $25 gold plated sets that are supposed to be awesome and last longer. (Can’t vouche. Never bought them. But I will).

I do not work for or have any skin in the Stringsby mail game, I just vouche for them. Strings arrive packaged well and they always throw in a little something. A couple picks from someone etc. only drawback is shipping. If you buy one set s/h is 4 bucks. If you buy 10 sets, 4 bucks.

ETA I forgot. GHS Boomers. Typically an electric string. I bought an acoustic set for my Taylor 810. They gave it a Martin sound to me. Or as close as I have ever got. Take a grain of salt, cut it in half, and take that advice with that grain. Mine is an old Top end for the time Taylor and the top is thick as hell. It’s the neck that I fell in love with.

I guess everyone is different. I love the Elixir strings, because they last so long for me, and I spend more time really playing than anybody that I actually know. Back when I worked for a living, my sweat was so caustic, that it would destroy cotton t-shirts, if I didn't get them soaking in water right after I got home from work. I just put the brighter Elixirs on my Takamine. Sounds great, so I bought a heavier set for my tuner guitar.
That might be an added advantage of tuning down like I do also.

Me too. Sound great. Feel great. Can play them MAYBE 3 times. And my fingers ruin them. Everybody else talks about how long they last.

The chip creates a hum however when I play my electric. Lol

You know I'm only joking about that Vx stuff. My fingernails are the thing that I really have to stay on top of. They grow really fast. and always having the right pick. Little stuff.

I see you on the poli board. If I am thinking of the right person.

I doubt we agree on anything. But I bet I’d drink a beer with you and noodle around on guitars. From what you post you sound much better than me. So that’s called learning. Lol

I know, you post there in a blue moon too. People do what they have to do. I'm just all about freedom, and I mostly don't judge. Don't take me too seriously, I don't always remember to do the laffy faces. I troll a shitload though. Since it's almost Halloween, I was just about to start a thread about spooky songs. I'm gonna start with Don't Fear The Reaper.

Almost hate to post this, seems like the 4th or 5th time, but I've had good luck getting more bottom end (on some guitars) with D'Addario EJ-19's.

They are light tops and medium bottoms.

I got a steal on a Taylor 210 once so I bought it but I'm mostly a bluegrass and old country player so it was much too bright for me.

I ended up selling it and have bounced around with various guitars since including 4 or 5 Martins, I really like my current collection which includes an Eastman E8D which I liked better than any Martin I've owned and a small builder dreadnought with Brazilian rosewood back and sides paired with an Adirondack spruce top.

Do you do re-fretting work? If so, whats your wait time for one of those projects? I need to do it on this guitar but can't have it out of commission for 6 months. We don't have any capable guitar techs in CENLA so looking to the resident MB expert.

Wait time for me to turn a refret once it's in my shop, or wait time to simply get an instrument inside my shop?

Turn time once you get a guitar in my shop for a refret is typically no more than one week.

The waiting list to get a guitar inside my shop right now, however, is at least seven weeks deep. It's been a very busy year.
