Is one of the top album sales of all time? Ok, the title track had a lot of traction, but 1 of the top 10 in album sales?

2 out of three ain’t bad.

Yes. I've always been amazed how something so wretched could be so popular. There's not a single thing he's ever done that I can stand.

Say what you want about Meatloaf; yes; he is a sweaty smelly dog; but his pipes are better than most people humming.
Dude can sing. And the album is art. Going from one song to the next was what an artist did back then. And it was meant to listen to as a whole.

Yes. It has always amazed me. I never knew anyone who owned it, but it was always on the album charts.

Few under the age of 45 maybe even 50 today understand the concept of a Album as one body of work to taken in its entirety.

It wasn't driven by singles, but 5/7 tracks on that album are legit.
It also helps that there is almost nothing else like it in mainstream music. Jim Steinman as a lyricist is a genre by himself.

As a kid, that album cover scared the crap out of me.

It was released at the peak of the album era, was operatic as all get out, extremely well done, musically - it was like what Elton John or Billy Joel was doing at the time, but with a singer who was a cross between Elvis Presley and an offensive lineman plus a shot of adrenaline, mainly thanks to Liv Tyler's stepdad - so wrap your mind around all of that. (ETA: Now that I think about it, more in line with an "American" take on what Queen was doing at the time. Not exactly, of course, but parallel lines to that sort of thing.)
It was the absolute right place, right time, with the right product. And, upon hindsight, that album is exceptional and worthy of the critical praise and ranking on sales charts it has garnered.

I was just going to post something similar.
Steinman songs are instantly recognizable by the bombast. Love 'em.

I was in high school ten years after it came out and people were still playing the shite out of it

It became what it was (a very different album for its time) because Todd Rundgren got involved and became the producer for it.

whenever we would take trips as a family, my dad would always pop this cassette in and listen to the full length of it.
on long enough trips (like colorado), we hear it multiple times

I'd said before if Springsteen wrote Broadway tunes, he might've come close to making an album like Bat Out Of Hell. Didn't hurt that some E-Street members appeared on it, either (Max Weinberg and Roy Bittan play on the title track, Took the Words, and Dashboard)....
