re: Any young adult guys who'd like to get together and jam?

"Going to these places and meeting people is a great way to build a network of friends and discover people who have tastes outside of the mainstream. It's a great way to find those people who are looking for fellow musicians to collaborate with. "
Keep in mind that I'm looking for guys only!
By the way, even though I initially turned you down, would you like to maybe try again? I was willing to jam with some of the rock stuff, even though you weren't into synth.

"If I were you, I would start hanging out at those musician jam sessions at Baton Rouge Music Studio and going to shows at the Atomic Pop Shop and the Parlor. Remember, the majority of people who go out to see local musicians perform are other local musicians. They may be in bands, or they may just play in their dorms. "
I wish I could, but I've have to check with my dad to make sure those places are close enough that he can take me. If they aren't, then it becomes a moot point, and my search moves back here.

No, you continued being a major douche-nozzle in this thread. However, if you keep posting on this site and prove that you can: A. take a joke, B. stop being so uptight, C. try to make an effort to show up to some of these places and show you can take constructive advice, and D. stop spitting in the faces of people trying to give you advice, I may reconsider in the future.

I shouldn't have to prove anything to you guys. This was all a stupid missunderstanding.
I can take a joke, provided the joke is in good taste. A lot of the jokes I see on here aren't made in good taste.

You being all the way out on the fringes of EBR definitely doesn't help. The Parlor is close-ish to LSU and Atomic Pop Shop is by Baton Rouge High in Mid City. The closest of those near you is Baton Rouge Music Studio, which is on Burbank near the Jack n the Box.

I think all of those are probably going to be a no go then. They are too out of the way for my parents to bring me, especially if it's near LSU.
And you didn't give any info about what time they host, didn't state what exactly they host, and whether it costs anything or not, and what most people do there.
I'd make more of an effort to come out to one of these places if someone could reccommend one by Airline and Highlnad. Or what about one by the Mall Of Louisiana or something. A business district I'm more familar with and that doesn't take so long to get to.

The Parlor typically does shows that start around 5 or 6 in the evening and run until around 11:00. You just have to ceck their facebook page to see when they're having shows because they're not a regular music venue.
Kerry Berry's Atomic Pop Shop is a Record Store, so they're open all day like any other store. However, on the weekends, they often do all ages shows from about 8-midnight. Just like their facebook page and they'll start inviting you to all of their events. Their shows are all local bands playing original music, and they do shows of every genre. Plus, the people who work there are all very cool and very nice. If you have a dog, the store is pet friendly and allow people to bring their dogs with them.
Baton Rouge Music Studio does their stuff on Sundays from 1-4 in the afternoon. They also offer music lessons, classes, and recording services there too. If you're a good keyboard player, they're taking applications now for music teachers both for private lessons and to work their summer camp.

Where is the stuff that is open during the afternoon on the weekend or on a weekday? I'm tired of coming across places that only do shows on Sundays during the afternoon, when people should be resting.
And I'm tired of coming across places that put on shows during the later evening hours and late night hours.
Come on, work with me to discover something cooler.

That's it. No one's playing in the afternoon on a week day because people have work or school to do. If you want to meet people to play, you can either do it in the early evening on a weekend, in the afternoon on a Sunday, or late at night. The Blues Jams at Phil Brady's, Huey's and the Juke Joint go to 2:00 am and don't even start until 10! In the afternoons on the weekends is basically just festival shows at benefits or festivals. Those are typically either at Church Fairs or Downtown, and it's usually just cover bands at those. The next one is Fest For All.
You should thank your lucky stars that there are venues in town doing local shows that are over before midnight!

Also these reccommendations sound pretty wimpy and boring to begin with. You are not giving me any incentive to want to try them. You didn't state whether they are exciting places to go where I can play some of my covers, which includes some of the unfinished songs I'm working on, and as always, in terms of places to listen to music, you reccommended a place where only original music is allowed, not a good combination of covers and originals.

All this talk about shows. Where are those that are NOT put together as a business, but instead those that are put together as a fun private music showcase at someone's house or apartment. A young adult male musician group of sorts.
The reason why me playing at some of these places at 6:00pm is not so great is because that's the time when my mom and dad are usually ready to eat. And my dad's bedtime is 9:00pm, and my mom likes to stay up a little later and watch something on TV. So, in those instances, I'd need to eat at around 5:00pm, and make a friend who can take me to anywhere where I can chat with other musicians, and maybe even play some of my covers.

You can play covers at any open mic. You can play all the covers you want at the BR Music Studio. You can play covers at Brew-ha-ha, at Henry Turner Jr's Listening Room, at Huey's, at the Guru (when they do their open mic's), and at Phil Brady's. The Parlor and Kerry Berry's are places to meet people to jam with.
Another fun thing is the Bee Nice concerts in Capital Heights which are literally done in someone's front yard. It's usually acoustic acts, on 5:00pm on Fridays and they end well before 9. If you start going with them and network, they may let you fill in and play either as an opener or have a date to perform yourself. It's a very friendly kind of thing, but the ages do tend to skew more middle-aged than early 20's.
They were doing some fun informal jam sessions off of Perkins by the Overpass at a guy's house which he called Beauvior Park for a while, but I'm not sure they're still doing it. I went once and it was a real treat, but once again, most of the patrons were older.
This is Baton Rouge. It's not Austin, NYC, or Nashville. The fact that we have so many opportunities for local artists to play on a stage at all is nothing short of miraculous. 5 years ago, we didn't have half as many options.

Ok, with that said, which of those places do not attract the trashy musicians. Which ones are respectable and friendly places.
And which ones appeal to those guys like me who appreciate more pop, and modern rock and singer/songwriter artists and who are looking for a long-term friend to jam with and later create with?
Remember, I'm looking for GUYS only! White guys. Somewhat nerdy and intelligent Caucasian guys.
I talked to someone like you before, and it was overwhelming when she mentioned all the open mics, and stuff, but didn't relay her own experiences. Why don't people want to share their own experiences with me so I can have an idea of what to avoid, and what's safe. And what would be more appropriate for me, and ones that are more appropriate for the blues lovers, and harder classic rock lovers, and metal music lovers.

They're all friendly, and all will be majority, but not exclusively, dudes (just the nature of music). Modern rock singer/songwriters would be more than welcome at all of those places. Huey's is more rockers since their open mic is run by guys formerly of the band's The Hitchhiker and West Without, but they're still open to whatever. West Without was pretty indie-pop-ish.
Phil Brady's and the Juke Joint are blues places. However, if you wait until the end of the night, they'll let you play whatever you want.
Henry Turner's crowd is pretty "diverse" as it's at the Belle of Baton Rouge Casino on Thursday Nights and has a pretty eclectic group of musicians. They'll have everything from blues and soul to rappers and singer songwriters, rock bands, techno, just whomever wants to play. However, they are very nice and welcoming for unproven talent to come up and play if you just contact them ahead of time. They'll work people in to play sets as long or short as they're comfortable with. Just look them up on facebook. They have a contact email. If you shoot them an email, they'll set you up with a performance slot in the near future.
None of the other places attract "trashy" musicians. It's mostly just nice people. Very humble, down to earth people who love music of all genres and support one-another making it.

Do I have to be a professional musician to play at any of these places? Do I have to be someone who has a certain number of songs to play, or certain skills?
The reason I ask is because I don't play professionaly, and with some of those suggestions, like Henry Turner's Listening Room, I was told that you had to be a professional musician to play there.
It would also be helpful if you could reccommend some venues where I can play that provide a piano or keyboard for patrons to play, that way, I don't have to take my own every single time.

No. The jam sessions, you just show up, tell them you want to play, and wait your turn. The listening room, you just contact them ahead of time and they give you a timeslot.

I don't really know of any places like that unless you want a job being the piano man at Picadilly

That doesn't seem right. You'd think most places would actually provide a piano on stage, especially if it's an open mic. How are actual piano players supposed to share their creations at open mics when they don't provide a piano? Why don't they provide a piano? Most schools and churches, and even college campus's provide a piano for that very purpose.
