Does any album of theirs get any better than this? I can listen to it over and over and over again

I first heard the live version of "Whipping Post" around midnight on WRNO in New Orleans in its 23 minute entirety when I was around 15. One of the formative moments in my musical life.
Top 5 album for me ever.

I saw what was left of ABB with Panic last year. It was fun, but they are a shadow of their former selves.

They'll never be what they were with Duane but with Derek trucks and warren Haynes playing they are far from a "shadow of their former selves". They are still an amazing band with some of the best musicians of the day. Trucks even grew up with the band

As a pure live album, I still think Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison or Sam Cooke Live in Harlem are better, mainly because of crowd interaction.
For a live jam album though, LAFE is probably at the top.

put whipping post and mountain jam on a jukebox and ya get almost an hour of jam

Part of the experience of listening to a live album IMO. I enjoy the music on Folsom Prison as well as the back and forth that JC has with his audience (a group of hardened prisoners). Same thing with Sam Cooke and the way he improvises his songs to get the audience to sing along.
I will admit that parts of LAFE are musically superior, but is it as entertaining as Sam or Johnny? Meh, I don't necessarily think so.

I think the two aren't related, though. I think the crowd involvement added to Johnny's record, but the lack of such a rambunctious crowd didn't hurt the Fillmore East album, if that makes sense

Yeah. 1 of my favorite albums. I forget the author, but in the book "SKYDOG", there is an entire chapter dedicated to this album. The author breaks down just about each solo among others things. I really enjoyed reading his account, while listening to the album.
