Allman Brothers are not Southern rock

Sure, they spawned the genre. But ABB is not what I consider a Southern rock band. They were way too progressive and incorporated a lot of jazz and blues into their music. Better classified as an early jam band with Southern roots.
Lynyrd Skynyrd, Marshall Tucker, Wet Willie are more prototypical Southern rock bands.

Not all southern rock is created equally.
Skynyrd isn't Hatchet & Hatchet isn't ABB & ABB isn't Tucker & Tucker isn't CDB, etc.

Allman Brothers are about as southern rock as you can get. There are different types and styles of southern rock and just because they jam out (and might be the best to ever do it) does NOT mean they aren't SR.

I personally don't think they are SR. They fused jazz, jam, soul, blues, etc. It's unfortunate that Ramblin' Man got more airplay than In Memory of Elizabeth Reed...most people think they are Southern Rock based on that one song.

are all artists in a genre exactly alike?
I will grant you that the brothers were unique in that they did have some jazz, blues, etc. incorporated....and they were politically progressive for the time...basically southern hippies....but there is no doubt that they are southern rock...hell they have been called the godfathers of the genre for many years...even other southern rock icons admitted this and recognized them as such...its just that they were so good at their craft, they get a lot of love from the music world in general...and honestly...if you listen real hard....other "jam bands" like WSMFP have many, many "southern" elements so...are they now southern rock?...I wouldn't say so...its just that bands that are good and talented and bring in different influences can cross imaginary musical boundaries...just my .02

Most people would disagree with you they are about as southern rock as you get (as you said they kicked it all off) While they do have a wide range of abilities, I don't know what else would you could possibly categorize them as?

Maybe it's Gregg's voice but any of the songs he is the singer on I immediately associate with "southern". Ain't wastin time no more (my favorite of theirs), whipping post, black hearted woman, etc.

Yea his voice is very soulful (obviously), which lends itself towards the southern rock genre. The Allman's are like the Grateful Dead to me though, in the sense that they spawned genres without necessarily being a part of those genres. If that makes any sense. It's early and I haven't had my morning coffee or bowl yet.

What would you have categorized them before he died?

When Berry Oakley died I think they shifted even more.
I believe most people think of them as southern rock due to Gregg... his solo 80s work and his earlier dealings with the Dixie Mafia are very southern rockish.

I try to do at least 3 leafy pots per day in a glass receptacle locally blown by a custy named Rusty in the CBD.

Yes he was. He took Duane's passing the hardest. He also died almost a year to the day after Gregg did in the same spot.
