Full performance
This entire performance brings multiple emotions from me. First, it's an amazing performance from one of my favorite bands. I could listen to this on a loop all day long, several times a week.
While it's awesome to hear them, it was difficult to watch Layne struggle through the performance. He was clearly not ok. His voice was great and it came off great, but his body language said that he was on the struggle bus. He messed up bad during Sludge Factory and got really frustrated with himself.
At the same time, Jerry Cantrell's compassion towards his bud was awesome. He covered for him and engaged the audience to make it all better. You could tell he loved him and that would always show throughout the remainder of their friendship and after Layne died. Awesome to witness, even in watching Layne struggle.
Lastly, on a more comical note. Mike Inez's guitar has "Friends don't let friends get haircuts" written on it. Metallica was in the audience and they'd just released Load and revealed their new haircuts.

They didn't air most of it. Layne messed up 8 times on Sludge Factory. Luckily they tried a 9th.
The whole show was amazing though. My favorite Unplugged.

I did not know about all the edits. Wow. He was struggling big time.

I will say, the self titled album was released about 7 months before the Unplugged. Considering his state of addiction at the time it's no wonder he messed up the lyrics. It's not like it had been performed live a bunch of times.

Absolutely one of my favorite albums, but your boys arm was so rotten from the needle he couldn't play his own guitar parts. Pain makes good music and sad endings.

This was their first performance in about a year. I'm guessing they didn't practice much, or at least Layne didn't.

The opener Nutshell is one of the greatest live acoustic performances of all time. Just go on YouTube & look how many reaction videos people have done on it.

Actually it was "Friends don't let friends get Friends Haircuts", he was saying the Metallica guys looked like the characters from Friends, which makes it even funnier to me

Down in a Hole- near the end it is so sad. He just looks like he is letting go.

It and the Nirvana one are both great. I wore those albums out in high school.

AIC and Nirvana’s unplugged performances were my favorites and I still regularly give them a listen.
At 4:51 in “Where Did You Sleep Last Night” by Nirvana gives me chills. Kurt’s expression is haunting.

While I was not a big AIC fan while Staley was alive, I can imagine being a fan of the band for most/all of their run back then was liking watching slow motion suicide.
And he was pretty honest about those things, either in the press or in the lyrics.

It’s one of my favorite albums of all time. I have the DVD also.
Staley was not in good shape but I’m thankful they were able to put together one last good performance. I know they tried to tour after this but it went pretty poor from what I remember and they ended up canceling most of the shows.

This part of the very first song of the show (unquestionably my favorite version of my favorite song from them - Nutshell) says it all -

I was but felt like he was on borrowed time by the time that show aired. He was a mess. He went through treatment and did his Mad Season stint but he was starting to relapse and it was apparent he was headed back down. I also think around that time, his longtime girlfriend OD'd and he never recovered from that or wanted to. I'm honestly surprised he lived as long as he did post '97.
As a big fan of AIC, I only like a few off the unplugged show. I'm not a Nirvana fan but I think they had a better show.
