AIC's The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here released..... your thoughts?

For those that are listening to it today, what are your initial thoughts of the album? How do you think it compares to Black Gives Way To Blue?
Would you be bold enough to compare it to any of the Layne era albums? I don't think I ever could compare a non-Layne album of theirs to one with him on it. I have too much respect for the guy and what he was to AIC.
My initial reaction is that I like it better than Black Gives Way to Blue.

same here. BGWTB took a couple of listens to grow on me but after that I really liked it.
I had the album pre-ordered on Amazon from two months ago and I had completely forgot about it. As I was going to bed last night a little after midnight i checked my phone and saw an email from amazon saying the digital version was available on cloud, a nice surprise for me. Though I was up until a little after 1 listening to most of it. I thought it was really good, some stand out tracks for me were Stone and Voices, and there were a couple towards the end I can't remember the name of.
And like you said, you can't really compare these last two with the Layne stuff. I think it's great in it's own way, and AIC is one of the few bands that I buy the whole album the day it comes out even if I haven't heard anything off of it. Hope they continue to release more music.

I dont get this. You could say this if Cantrell was the one that was gone but he's not. AIC has ALWAYS been Cantrell's baby. He has always been 90% of the creative driving force in the band. As long as Cantrell is in AIC, every release will be similar and extremely high quality.

I agree that Jerry was and is 90% the creative driving force behind AIC, nobody can argue that. I just feel Layne's voice, emotion, issues, personality, and stage presence were 90% of AIC's image/public perception. It's a different feeling for me listening to them when the words are coming out of someone else's mouth, even though the instrumental sound may be similar.

While this may or may not be true (I have read where Layne had alot more creative control than 10%), to me now the sound is definitely different from the older stuff. It's overall a little more mellow and not quite as dark. Still great though.

I usually don't either, but really they only lost one half. Cantrell is still there and he does most of the vocals now. I understand what you are saying, but the new stuff is still really good.
If you liked old AIC you most likely would enjoy this.

9 out of 10 for me. ''Voices'' is my favorite song off the CD. I like BWGTB better but its pretty good overall... 2nd favorite song is probably ''Scalpel'' or ''Breath of a Window'' The end of ''Breath of a Window'' is really good. Didn't expect that.

Ya i really like where the song turns to at 2:13.
After listening to it over and over today, I'm really realizing how good it is. It's tough to pick a single favorite. The one that stands out to me though is Phantom Limb because of the simple but dark guitar riff with the drums behind it and then the solo at about 3:57 with that same dark guitar riff behind it. How can you not move your head to that....

Only reason I said 90% earlier was Cantrell was responsible for lyrics, melodies, all music, some lead vocals, almost all harmonizing vocals, and was the co-fronter of the band. Layne was a fantastic singer but did just that, sang. He was singing Jerry's lyrics 90% of the time. When you consider the main lyricist, main music inspiration, and co-vocalist is still in the band, the music will still sound very much the same and still be top quality. AIC isnt a Metallica thing where the "frontman" writes all lyrics, 90% of music, 100% of vocals, and does 90% of studio tracks. AIC is the opposite.
