I agree. A high end Martin is the best you can get. I cannot afford that though

I have heard many friends talk favorably about Alvarez guitars. I have yet to play one, though.

Martin because they have a great, dark sound. Taylors are good as well, but way too bright for my ears.

Wut?
After you hit ~$1500 price range, all the models differences above that could only be heard in a studio or mic'd live setting. Playing acoustically would be so little of a difference, the human ear couldn't notice.

I have a $600 garrison that is awesome. I've had it for six years and haven't had to change strings yet.

Here's a tip, and you may feel/look foolish/embarrassed doing this, but go into the acoustic room of the music store youre at. Ask a sales associate to hand you three guitars within the price range youre looking at. Close your eyes the entire time and dont open them until youve decided which one is for you. You will know in less than 30 seconds. Yamaha, Seagull, Takamine, and even Epiphone make extremely high quality guitars if you get into the 700-900 price range.

I have done something similar. I go in, look at design and name, pick it up, play it, repeat a few times, and then go back and look at prices.

That's not a bad idea. I messed around with acoustic guitars for probably 3 months until biting on a Taylor. It just felt right. It got to a point where I would grab that one every time I was in the music store.

Entry level Breedloves sound better than Martins and Taylors twice their price.
Acoustic players that have never heard of Breedlove should look into them. They make one off custom guitars that are just artwork.

If you want to be relatively safe–that is, get a guitar you're almost certain to love and play a lot–Martin or Taylor should fit the bill. Me personally, I've been very happy with my Taylor 110 (I believe their 110ce is the acoustic/electric version). I believe I bought it for around $650 a couple years ago, and for volume, tone, comfort (I have small hands) and playability, it's the best "overall" guitar I own. My other guitars are:
• Eastman e10d
• Larrivee L-03
• Seagull Coastline 12-string
I love these guitars too, but if you're talking in the $500-$800 range I imagine you'd be very happy with a Taylor.
About the laminated sides and backs–like many guitars in that price range, the Taylors have laminated sapelle sides and backs. I've had no problem with this; the guitar looks and plays fine by my reckoning. Just the same, if a good solid wood guitar is a must, you may have to look beyond Martin or Taylor, at least in your price range.

I believe this is the case with low end Martins, but Taylor? Are you sure? I didn't know they had a Mexican manufacturing operation.

Martin guitars are made in Nazareth PA, USA with the exception of the X Series (HPL) the Backpacker Series, Road Series, and the SO and S1 Uke which are made in Mexico.

and apparently taylor has a plant in mexico 45 minutes away from their US plant
