Lemme try to bring some perspective here.
The Beatles are NOT one of the most overrated bands. What we need to remember to do is compare them to their peers. Well, for me:
Beatles >>>>>>Rolling Stones
all fricking day long.
I realize full well that such a statement is indicative of more than just musical taste, and I'll leave it at that.
What's patently unfair is to (and I hope I wasn't guilty of this earlier) compare the Beatles with bands that came a decade after them, like (for example) Yes.
The Beatles never set out to be and had no intention of turning into something like Yes. They progressed in their own way and at their own pace, and what you have is a road (if you will) that started with Please Please Me and ended with Abbey Road.
Quite a difference.
But it's not the same as going from Yes' first album (1969) and ending up with (arbitrary cut) Relayer.
Different times, different technologies and (most importantly) different mindsets about what rock music's possibilities were.
tl;dr: The Beatles weren't Yes and weren't supposed to be. Don't shite on them because of that. They were the most awesome band in the world in their time. Suck it Jagger.

I certainly agree that it is an unfair comparison to place the Beatles and YES in the same orbit, much less the same genre. While I will always consider the Beatles as the greatest of all time, I will always consider YES as the greatest live act of all time. And yes, both are simply personal preferences.
It's interestim to me that you mention Relayer. I find that to be the last "wide ranging and far reaching" of their albums. While I do enjoy Tormato and Going for the One, to me they don't hit with the same soaring intensity as Relayer, Close to the Edge, and Fragile.

Personally, I think Abbey Road is the greatest pop/rock album ever, and I love the medley.

Prog is pretty much an example of bands trying to do the Golden Slumbers medley badly. All they heard was "an entire side of the record is one theme" and didn't learn any other lesson from it. Which is why they are King Crimson and this is the Beatles. I'm actually irrationally fond of Yes, but Close to the Edge or Tales from Topographic Oceans just shows the vast divide between the two bands.
Actually, I would say the bands that got the spirit of Abbey Road right would be someone like Guided by Voices on Bee Thousand. Lots of short not even fully formed songs which make up a larger whole. Take a step back and you see the whole masterwork. The Les Savy Fav EP series also expands on this idea.
And side two of Abbey Road is Exhibit A on why Paul is better than John. The band was barely functional at that point, it's practically a McCartney solo project with the Beatles as his backing band.

They both had their own amount of throwaway filler, but some of the crap John came out with is unbearable. Especially once he started letting Yoko influence things.
At least Paul's crap is somewhat fun to listen to... Maxwell's Silver Hammer, Ob La Di Ob La Da, etc.

Checkout the reworked version of Abbey Road with Seal, Matchbox 20, Counting Crows. Paloma Faith absolutely rocks " You Never Give Me Your Money."
