The Police (Excellence for most of the decade)
Madonna (Can't stand her, but she earned it)
Journey (Can't deny their commercial appeal)
I have other musicians whom I prefer to listen to from the 80's, but all of the above had huge audiences and were constantly getting play. Some others I considered were Bruce Springsteen, Metallica, Phil Collins and U2.

I don't particularly care for MJ or Madonna, but I think they deserve it.
If I were talking about my favorite bands, I'd add Dire Straits and Aerosmith in place of those two.
