Haven’t really watched John Wayne films before. I want to start watching some of his films. I think I’ve only seen Liberty Vance and Green Berets in the past.

What is your favorite(s) John Wayne movie? Where should I begin?

A quick intro to John Wayne:

The Big Trail
Stagecoach
The Shepherd of the Hills
Pittsburgh (significant b/c he's almost a villain here)
They Were Expendable
Red River
Sands of Iwo Jima (the one-two punch of RR & this made Wayne a superstar. He even got an Oscar nomination for SoIW)
Hondo
The Searchers
Liberty Valance
El Dorado/The War Wagon (Wayne as self-parody)
The Shootist

Island in the Sky is an underrated John Wayne movie. He plays a pilot who is downed with his crew in the frozen Artic. The story follows his crew's attempts at survival, as well as the search and rescue pilots.

North to Alaska is one of his more lighthearted movies that has always been one of my favorites.

The Searchers is number one on my list.

Haven't seen it in many years but recall liking "The Sea Chase". As a bonus it also stars Lana Turner.

Great movies with Wayne at his prime:
Red River
The Searchers
Who Shot Liberty Valance

Stagecoach basically made him a star.
Big Trail is a freaking crazy movie from early sound era (1930) and has recently been restored with an amazing print. The practical stunts they do with wagons and livestock is nuts. Wayne is 24 YO.

Stagecoach (1939). The truck chase sequence in Raiders of the Lost Ark was a homage to the famous horse stunt in this movie.
