Strangers
I would agree if it weren't for the idiot boyfriend. Don't get me wrong, I was a little tense watching that in the house with all the lights off. The masks, and them just being in the corner of a room staring at them, and the fact that they were just there for no reason etc..
But it could have been much better IMO if it weren't for him. They didn't have guns, you have a shotgun... Cmon man!

Oh, and why so many votes for Jesus Camp. I have not seen it yet but read what it's about, just sounds like a religious documentary, could you explain what's so scary about it?

Exorcist III - Surprising creepy flick, most people don't give it a shot since Exorcist II sucked so bad
Audition - Japanese movie but pretty easy to find
The Omen (1976)
The Serpent and the Rainbow (1988)

Very suspenseful, especially the first 30 minutes:

Strangers was pretty scary.
UNTIL.......it started to drag about 45 minutes in. But the 1st 45 minutes or so was really scary.
The silent house ....then the knock on the door. Freaky!

"The Devil's Rejects"
Good movie...but more gore than scary.
The Exorcist is still probably the scariest....
Although one that sticks with me is "The Town That Dreaded Sundown"
Partly because it was a true story and partly because is was sort of close by..Texarkana...

I think a lot of it depends on what you find scary.
I think House of 1000 Corpses was awesome. Very graphic and some of the images stay in your head for awhile. Devil's Rejects was a sequel to it, but wasn't near as good.
To the person who recommended A Fire in the Sky...
That freaked me out as a kid, but haven't watched it since then.

The Ring, Jaws and Alien are the only movies I can come up with as "scary". Jaws and Alien, I was way too young. The Ring was just freaky. I could care less for gore, so zombie movies and stuff like hostel and Saw don't do crap for me. I have "The Descent" in my queue. Is it worth watching anyone?

aliens
also
if no one said yet and remember seeing silence of the lambs in theatres (i was maybe like 11 or so) and haven't seen many scary movies in the theatres since then.
