Would Harry Potter had been better with Richard Harris living and playing out Dumbledore?

Or were you satisfied with Michael Gambon?

I personally love Harris’ accent and would’ve loved he lived to play Dumbledore.

I think Gambon did admirably, but not on the level of Harris as an actor.

Yes. I like Gambon as an actor but his version of Dumbledore was awful. It was little more than generic British headmaster and so far off from the character in the books that it was distracting.

Gambon was figuring things out in Azkaban, took a huge step back in Goblet. Was ok in the limited amount he was in Order and was fantastic and really captured Dumbledore in Half Blood Prince.

I think the movies are great as they are.

John Hurt was wasted as Ollivander and would've been a better Dumbledore than Gambon. Of course they had no way of knowing Richard Harris would die.

No. Honestly, I can’t imagine Richard Harris as Dumbledore after the Deathly Hallows. He seems to be a bit week. Gambon was misdirected, but I think he was a very good Dumbledore. I imagined as a kid Harris being Dumbledore up until HBP and it completely disappeared in DH. I read it now and I hear Gambon’s voice.

Hurt I can see as a dark Dumbledore, but I have a hard time believing Harris. I just don’t see Voldemort fearing Richard Harris as he is.

If Ian McKellen had not already played Gandalf in LOR about the same time, he would have been perfect. I also agree John Hurt would have been fine.

If you read the books and listened to the Books on Audio version read by Jim Dale (We also listened to the on long road trips) you would probably agree that Richard Harris was a perfect Dumbledore.

Richard Harris in his prime was a bit of a hell raiser know for getting into fights. By the time he did these films, age and health slowed him down a lot.

Michael Gambon IMO wasn't "gentle" enough the role. The books portrayed Dumbledore as much more soft spoken but awesome.

Book nerds prefer Richard Harris but McKellen was great as Dumbledore in each of his films. A CGI Harris in the HBP actions sequences and other similar scenes in subsequent films would have been terrible.

I think you meant to say Gambon as Dumbledore. McKellen never played the role. He was Gandalf in LOR

I actually preferred the energy and demeanor that Gambon brought over Harris’ more calm and collected approach. I understand that Dumbledore was written in the books to be more relaxed at times, and I think if Gambon would have shown a bit more depth in his acting (probably due to bad direction), more people would prefer his rendition. I just don’t see Richard Harris giving the same type of performance Gambon did in Azkaban or HBP, and Gambon was great in both of those movies.

That was part of the awe around Dumbledore, he was always in control. Gambon did fine but he didn't have (or show) that kind of presence.

100%.

Harris was what I pictured while reading.

I'm with you, I read all the books and saw all the movies in theaters. Harris definitely did a better job with the calming and controlling presence behind Dumbledore. Both gave great performances in their own right, and it's a shame Harris passed away when he did.

I think Gambon was much warmer while still having a powerful demeanor. I much prefer his performance.

I did, hopefully that's the reason for the downvotes rather than calling out the book nerds.

Book Nerds:

It's not a 1:1 translation from the books, REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
