Why is the writing/storytelling so bad in modern blockbusters as compared to yesteryear

Even leaving out the original Star Wars films, just look at the huge, big budget action/Sci-fi films of the late 70s-early 90s such as Aliens, Jaws, Terminator 2, Jurassic Park, Raiders of the Lost, Back to the Future, Ghostbusters, etc.

All of those had extremely well written characters and plot lines to go along with incredible musical scores, production, pacing, and dialogue.

Even generational talents such as Spielberg, Lucas, and Cameron who actually helped invent and enhance the genre became lost and prisoners of modern tropes.

How did this happen? How is it that I can watch a film like Predator or Conan or The Hunt for Red October and be so much more captivated and entertained than a film they spent 300 million dollars on with effects unfathomable in prior eras?

Because of politics. Seriously.

Writers today try to write characters for a movie, but then try to stuff in political ideology, and it seems to never work out.

Or because studios are lazy and just want to make a few bucks.

It's become about money. Larger companies like Disney and Marvel only care about a movie's success based on the gross revenue the films bring in. And it's not to suggest this was never the case. It's just more of one now. It forces or encourages directors to play into political fanfare, cultural "trends," or diversity in order to appease a more 21st century audience. But there will always be great films.

movies are so expensive to make that studios want to play it as safe as possible. they want to take on as little risk as they can so that it can draw a big audience and hit their financial projections.

it's like Alex Garland said - for him to have full creative control over Ex Machina, it had to have that 4-person cast and small scope. the more money your movie costs to produce -> the less control you have over the final product.

movies fricking suck these days. it's sad

Audiences love stupid movies. CGI is more important than a good script.

Yes, let's go back to the era when nearly all the movies were vapid cookie cutter westerns and musicals.

It's not usually the writers. The blockbusters are huge investments so the suits have way more control than suits should ever have.

As for the "artists" at Disney, I think they are only capable of dealing in formulas. Formulas are safe and sell.

But, in this case, I think they knew they would have a big seller and decided to cram all of their silly bullshite into it. The returns will convince them that they're brilliant - even if they don't really believe it themselves - but maybe we see them hit the wall so hard that they are forced to change.

Calling people racist and sexist because they didn't like your shitty movie didn't work for Ghostbusters, and it's not going to work now.

Society is rapidly degrading itself, that’s why.
