Why is dubbing usually so bad and obvious?

Is it the lack of proper ambient noise in the background? NetFlix dubs a lot of their international originals and even when I'm in the next room and can't see the TV, it just sounds off. In theory that's just actors reading lines so if I can't see the screen it shouldn't be as noticeable, but it is.

it’s an long running inside joke in film business

Even some ADR for english movies is terrible. In ROTS, Obi Wan says "hit the buzz droids center eye" and he looks like he's in a Bruce Lee film. It's not synced at all and has always bugged me

It's a point of pain for me, but I'm a VO guy, so it's to be expected. Dark on Netflix was especially bad, but Mrs. Vox didn't want to pull the trigger on the subtitles.

What's funny about dubbing is if you put the subtitles on.
They are usually disimilar. Lost in translation.
I've found that dubbing is very coloquial and subtitles are extremely literal. Almost too much. There's no context.

They do it a lot on those cooking competition shows, top chef hell's kitchen etc. and it sounds like pure shite.

My favorite one:
“I talked to Barzini!”
“I talked to Barzini!”

Because one of the few things that makes us human we are really good at and we have a lot of practice in. So we can spot abnormalities.

Sergio Leone doesn't know what you're talking about.
