Why hasn't China gone after Hollywood directly & started their own int'l movie industry ?

Disney is taking a beating with China not showing some of the recent blockbusters. It's a huge market. Why doesn't China challenge Hollywood for the movie making crown?
Jackie Chan seems to be on board.

China has a huge movie making industry. But Chinese audiences tend to be more interested in watching American made movies than are American audiences in watching Chinese made movies.
In fact, I’m pretty sure China makes the second most movies per year, behind only India.

Many artists and entertainment types were killed during the communist revolution. I’m sure that discouraged a lot of creativity for generations.

The same reason that Bollywood hasn't conquered the world. The world wants American/British films. Especially with the American/British intellectual properties (Star Wars/Marvel/Potter/Bond...)

With the way China copies western countries, and steals their technology. I always wondered about that - were they taking a short cut, or are they less creative? Because of their culture?

Yeah, good point. And there's all sorts of topics the CCP won't allow, for propaganda reasons. I guess there's only so many state sponsored and approved themes they can make.
I see China-wood has been a thing, and yet so many movies from the US are being blocked from being shown there. Even though they rake in massive state taxes before foreign films can earn their profit.
Joker made over 1 billion , yet wasn't released in China. Now Marvel movies are being denied access to China's screens too. Was wondering if this was a temporary thing or what.

…They have. Where do you want to start? I’m an encyclopedia of knowledge on this.

And Bollywood, Taiwanese, South Korean, and Japanese films are way better than pretty much any Chinese film.

Let’s think why that is? It doesn’t take much. It’s a movie saying to rise up against the government, question all authority figures, says the system is rigged against you, and it’s a hard R-Rating. Of course the Chinese wouldn’t allow that.

True. My point was more about it making that much $ with OUT getting shown in China.

I would watch Ip Man again before any of the marvel movies. 2nd one sucked though. Lol at Tyson being the bad guy in the third. It's almost so bad is good.

Because it was a great movie and CNN passively encouraged someone to shoot up a theater for the audacity of this movie telling you that the media is your enemy and when someone shot up the theater they’d say “we told you so, peasants. Now listen to us and never fall out of line again.” The articles and coverage of this movie were absolutely disgusting.

If you're including the Hong Kong film industry and films under Chinese, then you can go to hell. If you're not, then I accept your statement.

Ah, right. I forget how quickly you make jumps to absolute nonsense.

Oh yeah, just slipped the mind. With you 100% on Hong Kong films. Chinese films as a whole just suck, and I’ve probably seen around 60 of them and more TV shows than I care to admit. If you’re trying to learn Mandarin, this wasn’t a bad show to watch even if it was torture and a horrific rip off of the Wille Coyote and Road Runner cartoons and Dora the Explorer:

No it wasn’t. They went for a week every night saying “Still no shootings at a Joker screening” as headlines with Brian Stelter and Don Lemon. No they were literally pleading for someone to do a mass murder. They were continually bringing up the Aurora shooter and asking their audience if they want to risk their lives by seeing this movie. I’m saying some people at CNN are so evil they want 50 innocent people to get killed simply to maintain their point and power.

Yeah, they wanted another 'Batman ' style shooting, like in Aurora CO. even though that nutcase wasn't pretending to identify with Joker at all. He randomly chose that movie because it was a blockbuster, not because he had any damn interest in making a message or identifying with franchise.
No lie, I had a security guard follow me into the bathroom during JOKER. I wasn't wearing a trench coat or anything concealing, but it was obvious that he saw me go in there and followed for a quick check to make sure I wasn't doing anything I wasn't supposed to. I guess that it's a good sign he wasn't being complacent, but man, the paranoia fabricated over that movie was ridiculous.

Yeah people need to realize that this is not hyperbole. Brian Stelter went to sleep every night hoping to wake up that 50 people had been shot and killed at a Joker screening and truly feels that they deserved it. It was evil. Who the frick reports that there wasn’t a mass shooting at a theater unless they want there to be a mass shooting at a theater?

I don’t know, something like Zhang Yimou‘s To Live is brushing perfection. It takes a skilled hand to criticize Mao’s policies, while trying not to criticize Mao. He brought that era to life for me.
