Wow that looks darker than I expected. But A24 and Pattinson and interesting story means I'll definitely check this out.

Well they managed to come off slimy and underhanded when the opposition was child sex predators and probably have to have the suicide in there. It's a pretty dark story.

20 years later and Chris Hansen is still out there busting pedophiles on his YouTube channel. Movie looks interesting.

They did? It's been ages since I've seen an episode but I don't remember Dateline coming off as looking bad.

I'd have had a little different catch phrase than Chris Hansen though.

*Pervert walks in and sets down flower and candy*

*Iwy walks in*...

No shite Dateline didn't present it to make Dateline look bad. Go read up about how it ended.

Can you just share? I know one guy committed suicide. Was he innocent?

Not really he had chatted with them and sent a dick pic but he never went to the sting house to meet the "13 yr old". Dateline and the cops decided to go to his house and arrest him and he shot himself when they were trying to swat team into his house. The cops were worse than Dateline and were basically just small town cops trying to get on tv. Dateline had crossed over from documenting some people catching pedos to trying to make splashier arrests to keep the show interesting.

To what he thought was an underage child. The cops swat teamed his house and he killed himself.

Sounds like a good day's work.

But not a smart day. When you're confronting at his house he could've shot of them, he could've had people in the house and shot them, but also the cops could've just done the cop work alone. Dateline isn't the police.

The funniest part is in season 1 they didn’t think to involve the cops so when he said “you’re free to go”, he actually meant it and it led to atleast one guy getting caught multiple times in the same day

Then after that they would still say you’re good to go and then the gilly suit would pop up

I believe most convictions got overturned or turned into lightweight plea deals

I mapped out the Predators documentary that's on Paramount in this thread. It's a good overview of Hansen's efforts but it ends with a bizarre look into the documentarian.

Besides the suicide, Hansen's come under fire for other stuff, including "catching" a high school senior trying to contact a freshman/sophomore.

Sadly, after all of the good that Hansen did on his NBC show, he begat YouTube posers who put zero effort into how to assist the authorities and are just doing a catch-and-release version of TCAP.

i admit to having watched that show quite a lot on tv and also on youtube. but i dont know man, some of it seemed pretty rough. most of them were clearly legitimate predators that needed to get got, without a doubt. but there were some guys that you really got the feeling were sort of dragged into the situation. i'm sure many will argue "well they were still talking to underage girls and seeking sex" which i get. but hooking in some poor loser in his basement who is entirely sex deprived, hopelessly hooked on porn, and susceptible to ANY kind of positive female attention feels sad and even a little mean spirited. especially as the show progressed and they needed more and more content, i have no doubt that a lot of these "decoys" were pretty aggressive in going after guys.

again, at the end of the day, they are still grown men going after underage girls, and they deserve what they get. but it feels like finding a heroin addict who is desperately clinging to sobriety, putting him in a room with a bunch of heroin, and then shaming and arresting him for relapsing.

If this film goes into Hansen's early days going after human traffickers in Thailand, this could be an interesting watch. He confronted some American expatriates who thought they were beyond exposure.
