Why Do Movies Like "Hoosiers" Not Win "Best Picture?"

I saw it last night. Great movie. 25 years later, it has stood the test of time.

"Out of Africa" won Best Picture in 1986.

Ok, fine. You can say that was the best movie of the year.

But, movies like "Witness" and "Kiss of the Spider Woman" were also nominated.

I get that Hollywood doesn't like sports movies. But, when it is a movie that ends up in everyone's collection and you watch it 25 years later and it still holds up, why is it often not recognized by the Academy at the time? I could list many movies that are in the same boat.

I thought Platoon won that year.

No. I looked it up. I think Platoon was 1987.

Yes you could.

I really don't have any answers for you. I think the Academy has gone to crap in the last few years. They let the movie studios decide what/whom to nominate.

There are many movies released in a given year that survive the test of time. You can't predict which ones will do it, they just do. Hoosiers is a great movie, it was considered to be great when it was released in 1986. There were just five other films the Academy considered to be better that year. Platoon is the only film I have seen of the five nominated films that year and I can truly say it deserved to win it that year.

In my opinion the Oscars died with the Weinstein Brothers. They were the first people to realize if they throw money at the Academy, perhaps the Academy would pick their movie over the others.

It's kind of hard to say if a movie will stand the test of time or be good 25 years down the road. Hoosiers is a better movie to you than Out of Africa, nothing else really matters. The oscars have a certain style of movie they want to win and they always will win. There are great movies every year that don't even get nominated much less win.

Yeah...Hoosiers isn't beating Platoon...although it could certainly beat the other nominees.

Academy doesn't think "sports movies" are "film serious" enough IMO...unless directed by Scorsese.

FWIW, almost every woman I know loves Out of Africa equal to how guys love Hoosiers.

Okay, yeah, Platoon was 1986. I looked up when the awards were held. Out of Africa was a movie from 1985. I was in elementary school then, so I didn't remember.

Platoon I can see. I just think that movies like Hoosiers should be nomiated. Not something like "Rudy." That was not a great movie, in my opinion. "Hoosiers" was a great movie.

I'm not saying they have to win. But, I just don't understand why they aren't nominated.

Then, you have a movie like "Braveheart" that I love and was very popular win - maybe because of the big budget, but Hoosiers was a better movie, overall. Heck, "Titanic" won Best Picture. "Hoosiers" is a much better film. So, it isn't like the Academy stays away from common fare or commercially successful films.

"Hoosiers" was about way more than basketball.

Too much baskeyball action scenes for the Academy. It reminded them of the horrors they faced in PE class as kids.

I was looking at his film credits the other day and was amazed how a guy that has been a great actor for so long and been in some amazing movies has also been in some real stinkers. I guess, like Deniro, it's a case of working too much and not waiting for great roles/movies.

Rocky won best picture didn't it? Most sports movies are just a bit too formulaic. A truly original one like rocky could still win.
