Why did Luke turn off his targeting computer?

Your R2 unit gets shot and is out of commission, you've got an enemy on your tail with a gun lock, and your entire base (including friends in family) is in target lock of the Death Star.
On the other hand, you have a computerized targeting system that is literally guiding you in and you decide to turn it off based on an untrained feeling.
Quite the gamble.
