Why did everyone hate Star Wars so much?

I absolutely loved it. They did a great job of making the story similar to the original, but unique. When I kept hearing about how Rey was going to try and turn Kylo Ren, and saw Kylo Ren kill Snoke, I thought that it was going to be basically a copy of Return of the Jedi where Kylo Ren turns good and becomes Ben.

There were other great things, like how you notice that when people stepped on the Salt, the ground became Red, where it did not do that for Luke.

The one thing I didn’t like was Leia coming back to life and flying. The only thing that it really contributed to the story was the purple haired lady I forgot the name of taking over, but they could have just had Leia get knocked out by a piece of debris or something, and it would’ve had the same result. I also could have done without the Finn side mission.

Everyone is going on about how Rian Johnson screwed up this, Rian Johnson didn’t explain Snoke, Rian Johnson didn’t make this clear, but people are forgetting there’s another movie. He doesn’t have to explain everything in one movie. That leaves no questions or mysteries in the last one.

I enjoyed the movie but understand the other sides point of view. I get it.

Because it wasn't a good movie.

Some people don’t realize they can’t have the same characters be the hero every time. Did anyone honestly expect that Han, Luke or Leia was going to make it through?

That's my biggest complaint. Should have just left her dead floating in space. She wasn't really needed after that.

Rian didn’t screwup Rey/Kylo/Luke so I’m happy. Wanted bigger role from Finn and Poe, hated Rose. I loved Hux in this movie.

I didn't expect Leia to make it.

That was the huge twist in this one.

Surprise bitches, the lady who is dead actually cannot die!

Yeah. Half the movie was pointless nonsense with no reason or relationship to the plot. That's a big reason for the hatred.

One of the worst scenes I've ever seen.

SJW nonsense. They robbed Admiral Ackbar of a heros death.

That's on the movie studio for being dumb as frick.

They decided to make a trilogy:

Movie 1: competent director and Original Trilogy Screen Writer.

Movie 2: Hack director who wrote his own script separate from movie 1 and believes in starting and filming a movie without a complete script and then piecing it together in editing.

Movie 3: Competent director returns but without the screen writer.

We'll see how that goes. But The Last Jedi was riddled with horrible forced out of place humor, and the most egregious ex machina plot armor I've maybe ever seen in a movie. Ever.

Almost every single action build up in the movie was robbed of a climax by some bullshite ex machina plot armor. By the end of the movie it wasn't even fun to watch scenes anymore because you knew there was never any danger of any main character having a consequence to his action. That's a massive problem in film making. And it's something the OT didn't suffer from too much. Especially Empire. And it's something The Force Awakens didn't suffer too much from either. Nor every character has to die, but one of them could've at minimum gotten substantially hurt.

People are upset because there was a legitimately cool star wars story line buried in a horrendously incompetent dogshit movie.

I don't want Han, Leia or Luke to be the heroes anymore. Hell, I was happy when Leia got sucked out of the ship. I want to move on from those characters and develop new characters. We're stuck in this Skywalker storyline and we're not going anywhere. Just spinning our wheels in the mud. Those characters not being the heroes has nothing to do with my dislike of the movie.

The comedy was forced. All the problems with Snoke. The Finn subplot was beyond terrible.

It just wasn't a good movie. It had good parts, but overall... no.

ETA: And this is coming from a huge Star Wars nerd. I can normally overlook flaws because of my love of the franchise and Star Wars universe. Not this time. Like I said in another thread, when the opening day Star Wars crowd gives it a 56% rating, you know something is wrong with it.

I think the next one will be about 5 or 10 years in the future so Leia can die of natural causes, and so the resistance can get more people.

There are 1000+ comments in the main thread and multiple threads on the front page right now detailing people's complaints of the movie. Don't be lazy. Read them.

In the OT a very focused and direct storyline was introduced in the first movie.

Luke Skywalker - an orphaned boy from a distant planet - needed to be trained in the ways of the Force in order to stop the most evil, most powerful galactic empire ever seen in literature. He was aided by friends who risked their lives and embarked on adventures to ensure that this special character could grow the way he needed to in order to stop the Sith.

Then over the course of three movies, we saw Luke grow and saw his friends aide in his journey and saw the Empire try to "strike back" to win the fight. We learned so many crazy and interesting tidbits about Luke's background. By the end of the 2nd movie, we were hooked for multiple generations in the STORY of Luke Skywalker.

We don't have such a focused story in this trilogy. It was almost there, but it's not happening.

Exactly what's left for Rey to learn and develop? She's not tempted by the dark side. She's already super powerful as a Jedi. The main bad guy is dead and was replaced by a petulant boy. If you follow the Star Wars mythos, you'd know that having such reckless anger makes him weak.

The Leia scene was an abortion. How can you see that as a director and think “yeah, that looks good, people will like that”

I didnt hate it. It's much better than any of the prequels. However, it fell way short of its potential. The most disappointing thing is that within the film, focusing on the main plot, there is an epic Star Wars film. It's all the nonsense that surrounds it that drags the film down.

And when did she get TRAINED?

That was a main part of 6 fricking Star Wars movies. You. Have. To. Be. Trained. In. The. Ways. Of. The. Force.

That's like Star Wars 101.

shite, even Harry Potter understood that.

But Leia - who never really used the Force in the OT - is suddenly defeating death by using her hand to fly through space?

I'm okay with the idea that some people are so force sensitive that they can naturally do some things without training. But the flying through space is ridiculously. If they are untrained, it needs to be clear that while they can use it, they cannot control it.
