Edit: But I have terrible gaydar. Hell, lived next door to a guy for two years and didn't know he was gay, though not like it matters to me.

He was a former cop in Philly, if i recall correctly. I dunno.

Yes and we know he had a bunch of informants he paid off. It seems highly likely he had a few cops on his payroll.

Gus could be former high ranking official; son of Pinochet or official; US secret gov./CIA working in Chile and then sent to Mexico with a quid pro quo agreement with the Mexican cartel.
Regardless...the back story should come back up...the show has made too much of an effort to show his supposed rivals can't kill him.

He worked for US intelligence in the early Eighties and was encouraged to traffic in drugs on condition that some of the profits went to the Contra terrorists in Nicaragua, who were being supported by President Ronald Reagan.
