Leo and it's not even close. As I watch Leo I get lost in the story and feel I am right there. With MM, I see that he is so aware of his performance and I never get lost in his performance. I am aware that I am watching a movie.

The hate this board can have for Leo is unbelievable. There's no way you guys can say with a straight face any movie that Leo hasn't nailed. He's pretty much good in everything. He's one of the better actors in the past 20 or so years. I really like McConaughey a lot, and his acting has gotten a lot better recently than in the past, but Leo is a way way better actor than him, and to me it's not very close. What's Eating Gilbert Grape, The Aviator, Wolf of Wall Street, Blood Diamond, The Departed. Enough said.

Gilbert Grape.

He's the only actor who has successfully broken the "never go full retard" rule.

And no, Hoffman in Rainman doesn't count - that wasn't full retard.

I like Matt but most of his characters are so similar outside of a few. Leo is just so much more diverse
Really? Leo pretty much is Leo in every movie too

What is this bullshite.

You can't know that.

That is like next-level sensory ability.

Just say if YOU can see or unsee the actorthat is playing the character.

His acting has been the same.

His roles are a little different, kind of...maybe bigger roles...

This is a myth.

If you look at his films he didn't do as many as you think he did, and the ones he did were in between serious movies.

I just think he's gotten the lead role more now.

If we go by body of work then Leo gets the nod. Don't get me wrong, a body of work shows consistency and the more roles that vary the greater the range. I find MM to have greater range because of the contrast from Mud to TD to DBC. That is what gives him credibility. Even in his comedy romance career he threw in a role in Reign of Fire that was not typical. They both put more than most into their roles. Revenant is just such a powerful performance given the extreme elements. DBC required MM to lose so much weight. They both are great actors. The whole TD character was so different than any other character for MM. Leo has intensity but MM has soul that he brings that exceeds Leo. I give the nod to MM if we say who is better right now. I give the nod to Leo if we say who has a better body of work.

If you asked this question 5 years ago, you would have been downvoted to oblivion.

MM has gotten better, but he's still not on Leo's level

Leo will go down with a better body of work in the end but MM has turned in better individual performances.
